Bulgarian No.1 Grigor Dimitrov yesterday placed his uncertainties over his participation in the 2020 US Open. The former World No.3 will wait and see how the situation pans out.

The  US Open was granted permission by the New York Governor Andrew Cuomo to hold the tournament as per schedule. Since the announcement, Serena Williams and John Isner have announced that they will take part in this year’s US Open. The 2019 Women’s singles champ Bianca Andreescu will also defend her title this year. This year’s tournament will be taking place without spectators.

Dimitrov talking about the US Open on Adria Tour’s Instagram page said that anything could happen in 2 months so he will wait on his decision.

“Given the current circumstances, it’s very hard for me to commit to the tournament. I still believe there is a lot that can change overall,” said Dimitrov.

He also pointed out that many players could have trouble reaching Flushing Meadows. With different countries having different travel restrictions and rules it sure is difficult.

“We would just wait and see how things are developing a little bit. But given the circumstances it will be very hard for a lot of players to get to the place.” said the Bulgarian

Earlier Novak Djokovic raised his concerns regarding the US Open. Given the US’s situation with the pandemic, it would seem a bit risky going there. He also wants a relaxation on rules regarding quarantine.

Defending champion Rafael Nadal is also skeptical and doesn’t want to take the risk of traveling to the US at this point. Only time would tell if these giants would participate.

Dimitrov is currently playing exhibition matches in the Adria Tour. He played in the first leg held in Belgrade, Serbia winning one and losing one. He will be playing in the second leg in Zadar, Croatia. The Adria Tour is being organized by the Novak Djokovic Foundation.

Grigor Dimitrov currently ranks at 19. His main career highlight would be the ATP finals triumph in 2017. He didn’t have the best start to 2020 as he crashed out in the 2nd round at the Australian Open. Dimitrov finished the 2019 season on good terms after reaching the semi-final at the US Open. He will be looking to improve that this year if he decides to participate.
