The name Greg Van Avermaet is synonymous with classic road races. However, even after taking a departure from the asphalt roads, the cyclist is far from hanging up his cycling shoes. In a recent race that took over the weekend, Van Avermaet ventured into unknown territory and plunged headfirst into the world of gravel triathlons that took place in Spain.

The SGRAIL100 race that took place in and around Girona is far from any ordinary race. The triathlon offers a fine blend of both unique and challenging experiences. The total distance of 100 kilometers is divided into different sections testing the physical stamina and resilience of the athletes.
Even though, two weeks ago, Van Avermaet had ridden his final race during the Paris Tours, he took part in SGRAIL100. It constituted 1,500m swimming followed by an 88km gravel ride backed up by a 10.5km trail run.
Van Avermaet took to his official Instagram handle to confirm and celebrate his first debut and eventual victory with the caption, “My first triathlon in the books. A bit out of the comfort zone but a lot of fun.”

As reported by Global Cycling network, at his first attempt at triathlon, Van Avermaet had a close call with veteran athlete Jim Thijs. However, the 38-year-old Belgian exhibited his athletic prowess and resilience by securing the top spot in the race.
Besides capping off a triumphant debut in the multi-sport format, the victory also supported a noble cause. Associated with the three-time triathlon champion, Jan Frodeno and the man behind SGRAIL100, the proceeds from the fund benefit the Frodeno Fun(d), the non-profit organization of the veteran racer dedicated to supporting philanthropic initiatives.
Van Avermaet being part of the upright initiative has acquired acclamation in the comment section. A fan commented “Proficiat Greg!!” while the other said “Legend! Enjoy new sports in your new phase… ”
