Bagging a broadcast deal was one of the most significant achievements for the LIV Golf league Greg Norman. In Mexico, the first match of the Saudi-backed circuit took place. The viewers’ ratings are in, and the revenue generated has been calculated. The numbers are making rounds on the internet. Now the question arises, were they impressive? Could they surpass the PGA Tour viewership? The fans have reacted candidly to the update.
Is the golf world impressed by the LIV Golf League viewership?
An online golf community, NUCLR GOLF, has posted numbers and CEO’s views. Their tweet read, “Nexstar CEO Perry Sook (parent company that owns CW) says they are ‘very pleased’ with LIV’s 1st-weekend performance with 1.4 Million people watching at least a few minutes” of LIV Content over the weekend across all platforms. 3x more revenue than normal on affiliates.” The results did not match the hype created by the Saudi-funded league.

The numbers were good for a league just a year old. However, the fans did not seem very impressed. The comment section turned into a trolling platform, and they passed the sarcasm after every few reactions. Norman was proud of the deal as he visioned his league’s success, and the TV broadcasting deal will play a significant role in it. But fans don’t see the reason behind the excitement.
The average of the LIV Golf League’s first live broadcast on The CW was 289,000 viewers and a 0.18 household rating over the weekend. The newly introduced CW app and the league’s official website were only accessible to American spectators on Friday for the first round. Hence, the availability might also be one reason for the viewership numbers. While some golf lovers were busy trolling, others were busy calculating and concluding if the deal was favorable. Here are a few of the reactions from the fans.
Will they even get 1/2 of 1/4 of these numbers for the next event in Tucson? Going up directly against march madness is a terrible strategy 😂

Not really fluctuating as much as just learning more info. Original numbers were 0.2 rating which loosely equates to 240k viewers. We then learn it’s closer to 270-280k per day, now we add in app viewers and Friday numbers to get 1.4m total.

Absolutely misleading or outright lie. If one person turned on app, watched a shot, flipped to Facebook, back to watch a shot, over to Twitter, back for one shot – that would be 3 views. Simply put, did not happen.

PGA Tour viewership is better
Sook explained the reason behind happiness and said, “our affiliates and CW affiliates in the top 10 markets generated about three times the amount of money that the network generated for this first outing, and so it’s selling very well.”
The PGA Tour’s Honda Classic averaged roughly 593,000 viewers on the Golf Channel on Saturday and Sunday and about 2 million people on NBC. LIV Golf’s numbers fell far behind those figures. We will have to wait and watch for the progress.
