Nothing compares to watching a sport live in person. And a traditional event like the Masters at Augusta makes it even more special. The most decorated Olympian, Michael Phelps, can attest to that feeling. Not only did he experience the thrill of the event, but he also witnessed a historic moment there. After all, he did watch Tiger Woods win his 15th major that week. And boy, did he sing praises for the golf legend.

Phelps and Woods both mark the pinnacle of success in their sports. The 28-time Olympic medal winner has often sung the golf great’s praises. But on that day at Augusta, he was far more than just impressed.

Back in 2019, Phelps had been fortunate enough to be invited to watch the Masters. He stood only a few feet away when the 15-time major winner took home his first major in 11 years. “I’m getting chills right now,” said the swimming champion to NBC Sports thinking back on the event 3 days after it.

The swimming legend accepted a last-minute invite, on the Monday of the Masters week to watch the event. And after it, he was more than glad that he had accepted. He was mind-blown by what he had witnessed. “The chance to see that man [Tiger Woods] at that place be able to come back when everybody counted him out,” he said.

For Phelps, it was the entire experience of it all that excited him. The atmosphere of the iconic course, the comeback that the golf pro made, and the 82-time PGA Tour winner claiming his 15th major in front of his children—he had enjoyed every second of it. “Having a chance to see him do it on his terms with his kids there, I was speechless for two days,” claimed the 23-time Olympic gold medalist.

The Olympian claimed that he too knew a little of what the golf great was feeling that day. “I kind of have an idea of what that feels like, climbing back to the top of the mountain,” he stated, thinking back on the time when he was also written off and made a comeback in 2016 to win 6 medals and become the most decorated Olympian ever.

Perhaps the two legends are a lot more similar than most think. They’re both GOATs in their own sports. Furthermore, they’ve both seen controversies in their careers, and yet kept their resolve to make it back to the top.
