Jon Rahm said he would lay low for a while. Apparently, he was under strict restrictions. Naturally, everyone expected him to coop up inside his sprawling Spanish home. But Rahm is a Basque native after all. Like a true Basque, he turned up at the home game of Athletic Club against Atletico de Madrid.

In fact, Jon Rahm kicked off the thrilling match between the Lions and the Colchoneros. The Spaniard, however, ditched the Letterman blazer in favor of his green jacket for the occasion. The 2-time major winner, a long-time member of Basque’s oldest club, was named the club’s first ambassador at the club’s 125th anniversary celebration. However, his LIV Golf switch has irked many fans, including his club supporters, who minced no words to slam the Spaniard on social media.

Jon Rahm is on cloud nine in the stands

The Athletic Club posted on their official X (formerly Twitter) handle a clip of Rahm celebrating their home match victory, captioning, “Jon Rahm is loving the life back home.” The Spaniard was at San Mames in Biscay, sporting the club color with a red-and-white scarf at the stadium.

In the high-profile match, two goals from local heroes Gorka Guruzeta and Nico Williams sealed a victory that lifted the Lions to fifth place in the La Liga table. The 11-time PGA Tour winner was visibly excited after beating their long-time rival at home.

Notably, this was Rahm’s first ‘outing’ since he was spotted at Biscay to receive the Dama Bilbaina prize, where he was swarmed by media persons. Speaking at that time, Rahm said he had spoken too much after his LIV Golf switch, and there won’t be any interviews till February, when the LIV Golf season begins.

However, despite coming out to support his home club, the Spanish international has lost a chunk of his home fanbase. It appears Jon Rahm’s surprise switch has put a dent in his reputation, as his club fans too have questioned his loyalty to the Basque side.

Fans tear into the Spaniard

One fan took a dig at Rahm’s staggering transfer fee. They quipped that the Athletic club must have paid him to turn up at the stadium.

Rahm’s about-turn has not sat well with many. And it turns out Athleticzales is no exception either.

Another fan echoed a similar dismissive sentiment, writing that he might very well support Real’s (Real Sociedad) next match. Notably, the Basque derby between Real Sociedad and Athletic Club is one of the most anticipated games for the club’s supporters.

One user sarcastically said Rahm must have jumped like this after the LIV Golf offer. Although Spanish International didn’t disclose the amount, it is reported to be close to $500 million.

This fan pulled no punches when they outrightly called the Spaniard a ‘sell-out.’ It has found echoes in the media as well.

The Spaniard surely didn’t expect such berating from his home crowd. The defending Masters’ champion’s LIV Golf switch has ripple effects that reached the Iberian shores as well.
