One of the most controversial calls happened during the game between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Cincinnati Bengals. On a third-down play, the Chiefs failed to convert, and the play didn’t count due to a clock error. According to an article by ESPN, referee Ron Torbert’s crew tried to stop the play before it started after noticing that the game clock was running, which it shouldn’t have been, as the previous play was an incomplete pass by the Chiefs. However, the attempt to stop the play wasn’t seen or heard on the broadcast. Apparently, players and coaches didn’t appear to notice it. We all know that once an official rules a play dead, it’s considered dead, and the play can not be undone.

On the second attempt, the Chiefs were awarded a first down due to a defensive holding penalty against the Bengals. This call was confusing in real time but makes sense in retrospect. CBS, later on, showed a replay of the official trying to stop the play. Although it was disheartening for the Bengals, this was the right outcome.
