Rory McIlroy’s fans are sometimes reported to be way too much rowdy. Take the 2023 Open Championship for instance. As Jon Rahm scored a 3-over 74 on Thursday, he could barely walk at his own pace since there were so many people around him. This pissed him off. And well, that was not all. As he walked off the eighteenth hole, trying to deal with his defeat by a whopping six strokes, one of McIlroy’s fans came with a mic, trying to keep up with his pace. Rahm felt insignificant even walking beside Rory McIlroy. Well, as it turns out, Max Greyserman has been going through worse because of his fans.
Max Greyserman started playing on the Web.com in 2019. However, his gameplay did not manage to draw much attention from the spectators. He missed the cuts in the first two starts of the season back then, and had just started pacing up with a T-18, after a T-53. Yet, he still managed to make the headlines. What was the reason behind his popularity back then? Well, as it turns out, he was a complete lookalike of the PGA Tour Rory McIlroy. Making things all the more uncanny, pretty much like the Northern Irishman, Greyserman too wore Nike apparel and had the same height (5 foot 10) as listed on the PGA Tour.
Volunteers time and again would state that Rory McIlroy is teeing off on the Tour, and not Greyserman. Recently, the 26-year-old shared his experience of being compared to McIlroy. Max Greyserman appeared in the latest episode of ‘The Smylie Show’ podcast. As he spoke about his journey into the top 50 on the OWGR list, he went on to add how he has never really played with Rory McIlroy, but during the practice round of the 2017 US Open, they were in the same group. “I was wearing all Nike and so like the resemblance between me and Rory was uncanny”, he said. Even Charlie Hulme’s wife was fooled by the resemblance. The co-host and the producer of the show’s wife thought that it was Rory McIlroy teeing off when he witnessed the Ukranian golfer teeing off a few weeks ago.

As they pulled out pictures from the past, the 26-year-old PGA Tour Pro said, “I think I used to look way more like him than I do now but when I was a junior”. He went on to add how when he started wearing Oakley since he became the Junior ambassador, even McIlroy wore them, just like the Nike thing. And the resemblance was so bad, that fans would barely recognize it. “I’ve been asked for autographs I’ve been asked at the airport this and that and all that stuff”, he added. In fact, during the US Open practice round, as he entered, fans started screaming Rory McIlroy’s name, and well, that really must have been embarrassing. He even shouted back at them, “Rory’s back there.”

Well, as it turns out, this was not the first name the Northern Irishman’s fans came across a lookalike of him. The same happened at the 2018 British Open.

Could Max Greyserman's resemblance to Rory McIlroy be more of a blessing or a curse on the course?

Rory McIlroy was among the fan favorites at the 2018 British Open, and well the spectators almost thought that it would be him clinching the trophy that year. However, he finished tying for the second position, with three others, two strokes behind Francesco Molinari. But well, as it turns out, he did manage to leave the fans crazy. At the Carnoustie, a fan appeared, who looked like the spitting image of the Northern Irishman.
So much so that anyone could easily take him for the 4X Major Champion. But the fan did manage to bring out some loopholes to avoid confusion. To begin with, he wore a t-shirt that said, “I am not Rory” so that fans do not come cheering up to him. And well, the 34-year-old wears a Nike hat, and the fan intentionally put on a Srixon hat, and of course, most importantly he stood behind the ropes. But the fans were left in awe of the resemblance, just a year before Greyserman was introduced! Do you think both the pros still look alike? Let us know in the comments section below!
