They worked together for 25 years, and their partnership was one of the most legendary player-caddie teams in golf. It was never in the books for them to meet; they met unexpectedly. On one occasion, Bones was visiting his favorite record store in Tempe, Arizona. There he sat down to watch a random, left-handed college student hit balls on the range.

Was the golf world shocked to see Phil Mickelson from 1994?

It has been 28 years since that picture was taken. And still, it intrigues a sense of pride and happiness. They were the best duo the golf world has ever known. Even though later, their relationship was overshadowed by controversies, they still had the most memorable time together. Not many fans might know, but Bones never considered being a caddie for the major championship winner, Mickelson.

However, the tables turned when the former Arizona State coach, Steve Loy, came to him in 1992. He was looking for a caddie for Mickelson, who had already won on PGA Tour in 1991, while still holding an amateur status. Bones abruptly left the conversation with Loy and sent a note apologizing to the Arizona State athletic department.

However, later the pro golfer offered him the job during the practice round of the Players Championship, later in 1992. And all these memories came running back, looking at the duo’s picture from the golden days. Golf fans found the team attractive and adorable. According to them, they looked cute when they were young. Appreciations for the duo filled the comments section. Let’s see some of the reactions from fans.

Why did Bones and Mickelson part ways?

According to ESPN’s Bob Harig, Phil Mickelson and his long-time caddie, Jim “Bones” Mackay, split up mutually. Before calling it quits on their iconic relationship  in June 2017, the duo won 41 of the golfer’s 45 PGA Tour victories.

Tim Mickelson, the golfer’s younger brother, took the former caddie’s place. The split was mutual because the duo thought it was the right time for the change. Mickelson said“After 25 very rewarding and memorable years, Bones and I have mutually decided to end our player-caddie relationship.” Any single incident did not motivate their decision, but they felt the need for change.
