Golf is a tricky sport—more mentally than physically! Anyone who plays the sport or knows the sport understands this! Golfers such as Jack Nicklaus have been vouching for golf to be a mental game, so much so that he once said, “Don’t ever try to tell me golf is not 99.9 percent a mental game.” Some may agree, and some may not, but this three-time Major champion definitely agrees with the Golden Bear.

A golf veteran and a former PGA Tour pro have recently given a reality check about the importance of the mental game and the reality of what the sport actually looks like. His words were pointed toward anyone who thinks they are better than professional golfers and thinks that they might just sustain the brutality of the sport.

Padraig Harrington, currently competing in The Senior Open, is one of the finest senior golfers. He has been nurturing toward the young golfers and has shared his finest techniques with them in the past. But in his recent video that has been shared by the Legends Tour, the golfer is sharing some insights for everyone who thinks they are better than pros because they hit one ball exceptionally well.

The golfer said, “Once you get to our level, it is 99% mental.” He said he would find 10,000 guys who are more talented than the pros and can hit the ball better, but those people will never be as good as the tour players. The main reason behind this is that the mental stress that professional players go through is substantial and cannot be compared with what regular golfers go through.

He then said there are a few players on the tour who are not as good ball strikers but are stellar pros. It is all about how well a golfer is able to sustain the mental pressure of the game. “At this level, it’s all attitudeattitude about the self, attitude of taking shots, your self-beliefs. It really is mental.”

The Irishman then also spoke about golf being a circumstantial sport and how some days can be better than others, and vice versa. The 3x major champion said that sometimes things happen to you on the golf course that are completely out of your control. Everything eventually builds up on the golf course. But it seems that Bernhard Langer disagrees with Harrington about golf being mostly a mental sport.

Langer, who won the Senior US Open, dispelled the belief that golf is primarily a mental sport. According to him, if two players with the same skills and experience are competing, only then does it sometimes become a mental sport.

There are cases when even the player with weak mental strength can outperform the one who has less experience and skills. He believes that golf is primarily a sport of skills, techniques, and experience.
