While the disappointment of missing the cut at the US Open weighs heavily, the recent allegation regarding Phil Mickelson has shocked the golf community. Indeed, the brand-new excerpts from the afterword of Alan Shipnuck’s infamous book have gone viral, for all the wrong reasons.
The incidents narrated in the book make for a derogatory image of Mickelson, who had formed the notion of a caring husband and a devoted father to his three kids. But is there any truth to the book’s latest narrative?

Released last year to the public, Shipnuck’s book on Mickelson, titled, ‘Phil: The Rip-Roaring (and Unauthorized!) Biography of Golf’s Most Colorful Superstar’ made all the wrong headlines. The work has been since disapproved by the golfer himself, but that hasn’t compelled the author to add further inflammatory stories surrounding ‘Lefty’.

In his latest afterword to the book, Shipnuck narrated another incident that takes us back to 2015. During the year’s Barclays Open in New Jersey, Mickelson allegedly invited golf compatriot Pat Perez and his wife, Ashley Perez, to dinner.
While everyone made merry at the table, things went downhill after Pat excused himself to use the restroom. According to the contents of the book, Mickelson whipped out his phone to show Perez’s wife a photograph of himself that she found offensive.
Is Phil Mickelson’s latest embarrassing story true?
After making headlines with the release of the controversial book, Mickelson and his attorneys outrightly dismissed the unproved claims. While his new story also lacks substance, it could turn out to be the missing piece for the flaring tension between the two golfers.
Indeed, Perez has publicly admitted to his scathing detest for old pal Mickelson. In a podcast from 2021, the LIV golfer made his opinions clear regarding the animosity between the two.
“When it comes to Phil, I have a different hate for Phil than most people,” Perez said, adding, “Phil crossed the line with me that is just uncrossable and unforgivable.” While he didn’t reveal what caused him such a great deal of pain, the seasoned golfer revealed how ‘Lefty’ felt after his actions. “He knows that he screwed up. He apologized for the action, but I cannot forgive him for it because I’ve known Phil for a long, long time.”

Does Shipnuck’s recent tale fit the bill for Perez’s wrath towards Mickelson? If true, it could be a major blow for the latter’s long-term admirers, who have believed him to be the perfect family man.
Indeed, Mickelson was lauded for taking a break from his golf schedule when his wife, Amy, was diagnosed with cancer. He even put his family before professional goals after missing the 2017 US Open, the only missing major in his trophy cabinet, to attend his daughter’s high school graduation.
Will Mickelson maintain his status as one of golf’s most endearing husband and father? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.
