The 2023 KPMG Women’s PGA Championship has started with a bang. Some of the golfers are performing exceptionally on the field. This includes Leona Maguire, Melissa Reid, Minjee Lee, Xi Yu Lin, and Celine Borge. Among whom, the Irish golfer, Maguire is leading the scoreboard after Day 2.
Amidst all this, a veteran name is also visible in the top 10 on the leaderboard. After a long time, the South African star who turned professional in 2007 has been able to execute well on the greens. Currently tied for the fifth berth, the 42-year-old would be aiming for an iconic finish. But, equally interesting as her endeavor toward the second women’s golf major, is a story associated with the golfer. It is sure to create intrigue, especially with context to Lee-Anne Pace‘s current standing.

With the form the South African veteran Lee-Anne Pace is in, this fascinating story from 2019 was bound to resurface. Beth Ann Nicholas of Golf Week took to Twitter to share this riveting side of the golfer and how it sort of coincides with her performance once more. According to the writer, the story starts in Las Vegas when Pace sat down for a tarot card reading.
Based on the cards, the professional was going to make a lot of money. However, the season wasn’t going well for Pace. Either her performances had been underwhelming or she had missed the cut. The reason for the same had been her health issues which had even urged the golfer to retire from professional golf. So, the tarot card reading wasn’t exactly working.
But, then came the twist in the story. Inaugurated in 2019, a new strategic challenge was introduced in the PGA and LPGA Tours. As per this Aon Risk Reward Challenge, the top average score to par at the end of a season gets to take home $1 million and a trophy. At that time it was none other than Lee-Anne Pace! Then, these numbers seemed to fit well with the prediction the golfer had received earlier.
Lee-Ann Pace currently leads the KPMG. Four years ago, she was set to retire but then kept playing because her sister called to tell her she had a chance to win $1 million in the Aon Risk Reward Challenge. Fun story from 2019! (She didn't win, btw.)https://t.co/SE3FC6ritP

The news of Pace leading the challenge was conveyed to her by her sister. According to the reports, the South African golfer required just 17 more rounds to qualify for the prize. The end of the first year of the challenge did not crown her the winner. She took third place right below Carlota Ciganda and Ariya Jutanugarn at a -0.73126 average to par for 26 holes played.
Now, this is what one calls an absorbing story. This might have further urged the golfer to continue staying in the game till now. Her current standing in the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship leaves no stones unturned to show how she made the right choice.
The stellar first round of Pace at the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship
Arguably, as one of the least expected stars to shine at the Lower Course, Lee-Anne Pace put a stop to all doubts on Day 1 of the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship. Her first round displayed a brilliant performance and provided a glimpse of the caliber she holds. In fact, the golfer made five birdies with 5-under 66 at the end of the first day.

Given that the veteran doesn’t participate in a lot of competitive golf anymore, the bogey-free round surely reflected the intention of the star golfer which is to enjoy the game to its fullest. Consequently, her shots and presence of mind on the field have been great so far. However, following a stellar Day 1, the second round wasn’t as great as the star would have hoped it to be.
The professional made a couple of bogeys and finished her Day 2 at 3 under par. She would be looking to gain back her momentum in the remaining rounds now and finish the major at an even better position than T5.
