Is Xander Schauffele's gesture of bringing the Claret Jug to his grandparents the ultimate family tribute?

Xander Schauffele might not be at the peak of his gameplay at the 2024 strategy. He is currently at T40 with a 5-under after the Saturday round. However, the event in Japan will always remain special. From his mother growing up in Japan to his wife’s mother hailing from the same nation, he already has a lot of attachment to the place. While he is unable to make it there often, he makes sure that the entire event becomes a family occasion.

Well, that is not all for his connections in Japan. Xander Schauffele’s maternal grandparents live in Tokyo. Due to their age, they hardly get to make it to the US, and barely get to see him play live. However, they never miss his presence at the ZOZO Championship in Japan. They could not watch him win the gold medal at the 2020 Olympic Games in Japan, and that was a major letdown. Apart from seeing him play, it looks like they have a surprise from the former World No. 2 this year.

The 2024 season was phenomenal for the American pro golfer. He not only managed to bag his first major win at the PGA Championship, but two months later, he defeated Justin Rose and Billy Horschel by two strokes and bagged a win at the Open Championship in July. This made him earn the Claret Jug. And well turns out, the family man carried the silverware all over to Japan to show it to his grandparents. The official X account of the PGA Tour shared the picture of the three of them. They captioned it, “Proud family moment.”

Xander Schauffele has always made his family proud. Take the 2020 Japan Olympics, for instance. His father, Stefan Schauffele had Olympic dreams as a German decathlete, but a car accident in 1986 ended his career. When his son bagged the win, he was able to embrace the moment because he is the only swing coach Schauffele has ever had. While all the other family members were restricted from attending the event due to COVID, he was the only one who got to witness it.

Rickie Fowler might have had six PGA Tour victories but he has failed to bag any major wins so far. Additionally, even his grandfather and his great-grandmother live in Japan. Comparing both situations, one of them makes a mockery commenting, “Something Rickie Fowler’s grandparents know nothing about”.
