The 2024 WM Phoenix Open will go down in history as one of the wildest, most chaotic tournaments in golf. The week started with a curveball as bad weather suspended play on Friday, but that was only the beginning. By Saturday, the real storm had arrived: the fans. Huge crowds descended upon TPC Scottsdale, turning the tournament into a rowdy spectacle. The scene got so out of hand that officials were forced to temporarily shut the gates and halt alcohol sales. But did that stop the chaos?
Not even close. Videos of fans having the time of their lives flooded the internet, including one showing a massive beer snake winding through the stands. The crowd’s energy was electric, even if it came at the expense of the tournament’s order. And then, there was the bunker incident. Earlier that afternoon, a fan decided to make his mark—literally—by diving into the bunker on the infamous 16th hole. After a half-completed somersault, he sprawled out to create a snow angel in the sand. Golf influencer Paige Spiranac shared the hilarious moment on X, joking that while the effort was admirable, “he did not stick the landing.”
And guess what all of this led to? Several restrictions. In fact, even alcohol was banned at the TPC Scottsdale because of the unruly behavior of the crowd. But, as it turns out, with the several changes that were arranged by the organizers this year, Wyndham Clark has come up with a rather bold surprise for the fans. He recently took to his official X account and shared a picture of his golf kit. On top of it, he attached a post-it note, that read, “Have a drink in me! – Dub.” In the caption, he wrote, “Tossing out some swag and buying a round for some lucky fans on 16 tomorrow Be Loud!!!”

He did it because the American professional will be entering the second round with a one-stroke lead ahead of Taylor Moore, and Lee Hodges at the TPC Scottsdale. And let’s not forget how beautifully! He opened the round with a birdie, and went completely bogey-free, carding seven birdies with a 7-under score. That does indeed call for a celebration!

You must be wondering, what gave him so much courage to be giving out alcohol after such unruly behavior last year? Well, all thanks to the organizers.
The new rules that have been used for the 2025 WM Phoenix Open
After the 2024 WM Phoenix Open descended into chaos, drawing national attention for its unruly scenes, tournament organizers unveiled major changes to revamp the PGA Tour’s most fan-favorite event. Known as “The Greatest Show on Grass,” the tournament, which regularly draws nearly 500,000 spectators, will see a host of updates aimed at improving the experience—without expanding the crowd size.

Among the changes are the addition of a second entrance, increased ticket prices, and wider walkways to ease congestion. Matt Mooney, the 2025 tournament chairman, emphasized the goal is to make the event “better, not bigger,” addressing the challenges that plagued last year’s edition. Through the new measures that have been implemented, the WM Phoenix Open is a safer place again, both for the players and the spectators. And that’s not all. There will be changes to the ticketing policies, and infrastructure of the event as well.
