Ryder Cup’s patriotism or the Olympic Games’ international glory? The choice seems to be quite clear for one of America’s picks for the Paris Olympics, Wyndham Clark. Despite the game’s long disassociation with the Olympics and late re-inclusion in 2016, Clark’s pick remains the Olympics, a peculiar choice that has further triggered already-angered fans of the game.

After all, the Ryder Cup’s long-going streak and intense competition ignited a different sense of spirit of patriotism among Americans, one that remains unparalleled for most till day. So when Clark heedlessly chose the Olympics over this emotion-fueled duel, the controversy became imminent.

His reasoning? Well, it remained primarily centered on the fact that the Olympics are played on a bigger and more internationally inclusive level, unlike the duel that the Ryder Cup puts forth. His exact words describing the “coolest team” he has ever made, were, “The Ryder Cup in golf is kind of the biggest thing, but now that golf’s in the Olympics, it’s probably even bigger than that, because you’re representing your country at such a bigger level… Hopefully, all four of us can go and try to snag some podium spots and give medals to the US to try to win that total medal count. But, yeah, it’s pretty awesome. This probably ranks as the coolest team I’ve ever made, for sure.”

The internet seemed to be at a consensus when it came to disregard Clark’s conclusion. While some called him out for his uncalculated statement, others were more focused on proving a different layout for the American 4 would have been more ideal. So what did the fans exactly have to say?

Fans react to Wyndham Clark’s peculiar Olympic choice

A fan wrote, “He is 100% WRONG! No team golfing event on this planet is bigger or better than the Ryder Cup!” Thus highlighting the Ryder Cup sentiment that strongly continues to color America in red, white, and blue colors. There seemed to be a clear consensus among users that Wyndham Clark’s take against the Ryder Cup glory in comparison with the Olympics was unjustified. Another fan was quick to remark, “Nope @Wyndham_Clark bad bad bad take,” signaling the growing consensus against this publically deemed poor choice.

One of the users was quick to attack Clark’s spot on the Paris Olympic’s American team and suggested that Bryson DeChambeau should take his place instead. They wrote, “He doesn’t deserve to be on the team. Bryson clears>>>>” Bryson DeChambeau’s calculated and science-backed approach along with his recent U.S. Open win has initiated this debate online. The fact that his choice to move LIV-wards has impacted his chances with regard to the Olympics has been opposed openly by fans. One more fan added, “He’s literally only saying this because he’s warming the bench on the Olympic team,” adding fuel to the fire of this OWGR-based pick that the fans continue to oppose.

Yet another Twitter user was quick to make note of how ‘team golf’ on the PGA Tour end of things are only valued when it’s not a major, thus hinting their support of the LIV Golf format and PGA Tour’s firm opposition to it. They wrote, “Funny how when PGA players aren’t playing in majors they get excited to play “team golf.””

All in all, the golf world seemed not so happy with Wyndham Clark’s choice of the Olympic Games over the Ryder Cup. What’s your take on this? Let us know in the comments section below!
