The European team captain returned to the County Kildare venue for the Horizon Irish Open. In 2006, Luke Donald was part of the European team that won the Ryder Cup on the same course. He was under the leadership of Ian Woosnam.
Returning to the course rekindled conversations about the prestigious event. Amid the discussion, one recurring name was that of McIlroy. The reporter asked Donald, “Is Rory expected to take a main leadership role this time around?”
“I talked to Rory about this and how he feels his role should be. Personally, I want him to lead with his golf clubs and I want him to lead with the focus he shows for The Ryder Cup. If he win, can go out there, and if he’s playing four or five matches and win three or four of those; I think lead by example and lead with his golf clubs,” Donald said.
Since 2010, McIlroy has made his presence known at all Ryder Cup editions. In a few weeks’ time, he will be seen at the beautiful Marco Simone Golf Club in Rome gearing up for another showdown.

The European team captain chose a rising star as part of his 12-player roaster. He recently achieved his first professional win at the Omega European Masters 2023. Indeed, Ludvig Aberg left Luke Donald impressed with his two-stroke victory.
Donald was so sure about his pick that in one of the conferences, he said if Aberg were not playing in this Ryder Cup, he would still have played in the subsequent eight editions. He called him a generational player, especially appreciating Ludvig for his speed and elegant shots.
While predicting Aberg’s future, Donald was sure he would become the No.1 driver, leaving Rory McIlroy behind. The guy who just turned pro in June is creating history by getting his name etched in the Ryder Cup roster and being compared to the legends of the game.

Indeed, Donald does not want Rory McIlroy to assume the burden of everyone. He just wants the Irishman to focus on his own game so the team as a collective can win. But can the four-time major winner hold his nerve to secure another victory for his side? Let us know in the comments below.
