Alas, the unforgivable golf fans. After several players like Rickie Fowler faced heat from the fans during their recent performances, is it now time for Jordan Spieth? Well, it certainly looks like it. Spieth’s gameplay has been lousy, and the proof is his winless season or seasons (as his last win was the 2022 RBC Heritage). The 2024 St. Jude Championship is also not any different as the golfer has displayed poor performance.
With a lackluster score of 7 over par, Spieth was at the T69th position after round 3. The 13-time PGA Tour winner was second to last. However, there is a reason for his poor performance. Spieth Legion, the golfer’s fan page recently made a post on X, sympathizing with the golfer and blaming his lousy gameplay on his injured wrist. “Just going through the motions, sadly. The surgery can’t come soon enough; it is very hard to watch him struggle like this.” And indeed, it is.
The golfer’s wrist injury occurred before last year’s PGA Championship and has been a lingering issue ever since. Spieth had described it as a “come-and-go thing” and said that it can be triggered by even the smallest actions, like placing his hand on a counter. However, the golfer didn’t opt for surgery, as he believed that didn’t need one at that time. “It’s not really a surgical thing; it’s a rest thing,” he said, according to AP News. Although, that has now changed as Spieth is now planning to have surgery in the off-season.

Fans have watched the player struggle the whole 2024 season. Sadly, Spieth has missed seven cuts this year so far, including one at the Masters. That’s not all; the golfer only has three top-10 finishes, so now you know why his name is under scrutiny this time.
Spieth shoots 74.

+7 for the tournament and basically last place.

Also, did we mention that Spieth is set to miss the BMW Championship? Yes, as per the competition rules, only the top 50 players from the St. Jude Championship qualify to compete in the BMW Championship. And with Spieth’s current St. Jude standing, the chance is already out of his hands. While the alleged reason for his below-average performance is his wrist injury, the fans refuse to believe it.

If there is one thing the fans do well, it is criticizing their favorite players to make their gameplay even better, and that was exactly the case with Spieth. This one fan called out the golfer’s outdated techniques of course management and said, “The wrist surgery won’t solve everything. The awful course management and the bad putting won’t be fixed with a surgery”. Well, the statement is perhaps correct.
Jordan Spieth’s struggles with short-range putts have become a growing concern. It all started at the 2022 Texas Open; he missed from 3 feet and then again from 2 feet. In the same year, at the RBC Heritage, he missed a 12-foot putt and later, an 18-inch tap-in. Spieth added the latest heartbreaking putt to the list at the 2024 Travelers Championship, where he missed a par putt on the 14th hole.
Some fans believed that his poor putting techniques would automatically improve if only Spieth tried new putters. Spieth has used the same Scotty Cameron 009 prototype putter since 2009 when he was a junior golfer. So maybe it is time for him to change his equipment. He did try the mallet putter in the third round for practice but ended up using his trusty one for the main round. Pointing out his old putters, this one fan said, “I’d kill to know the reason for not trying a new putter when second to last.”

A lot of fans believed that surgery was not the answer to improving Spieth’s stance. But this one fan pointed out his Iron play as a major concern. One fan highlighted that “his iron fundamentals are horrible,” suggesting that Spieth’s technique and motions with his irons were flawed, and said, “I’m not sure the surgery is the answer. Yes get it done, but his iron fundamentals are horrible. Adding to the disagreeing crowd for his surgery, one fan said, “Unfortunately it ain’t the wrist 💀💀💀”. It could be. The last time Spieth switched his irons was in 2021 when he started using he Titleist T100.
While some did not agree that Spieth’s gameplay would be better after the surgery, some fans did. This one fan said, “Get the surgery and get back to playing confident golf.” Do you think Spieth’s gameplay can improve after surgery? Let us know in the comment section below!
