Lydia Ko's return delayed—Is this a sign of more bad luck for women's golf?

After playing just the front nine, Lydia Ko and other golfers were forced to stop the play at the 2024 ISPS HANDA Women’s Scottish Open. Earlier, the first round was delayed by an hour and restarted at 8:10 a.m. (local time) [3:10 a.m. EST] at the Dundonald Links. And just after playing a few holes, heavy rainfall pushed the LPGA Tour and Ladies European Tour to suspend the play at 11:24 BST (6:24 a.m. EST).

After getting her first gold at Le Golf National, this was the first event for the 3-time Olympic medalist, Ko. It remains to be unknown when the play will continue. However, assumptions can be made that the Women’s Scottish Open has been hit with a similar fate to the Wyndham Championship of the PGA Tour, last week.

Due to inclement weather, the Wyndham Championship was delayed by a day and Aaron Rai finished the event on a dark Sunday evening. Whereas, Matt Kuchar finished his final round on Monday for the same reason. The Women’s Scottish Open may be forced to a Monday finish as well, if the conditions worsen in Troon, Ayrshire.

The golfers are in for more trouble. As with bad weather, winds blow off up to 10 to 20 mph, making it unbearable even after the play continues. And there will be chances of localized flooding, pushing the opening round to the next day. In case of severe conditions, the Women’s Scottish Open will be delayed to the second day. Will Friday be any good for the women playing at the Dundonald Links?

What does the upcoming weather of the Women’s Scottish Open entail?

Good news for the fans at the Dundonald Links and the golfers to tee up in South Ayrshire. The second day of the Women’s Scottish Open will start partly cloudy with only a 16% chance of rain. As the day goes on, the ample sunlight will dry the greens, making it easier for professional players. However, as the evening arrives, there are more chances of rain.

Have an interesting take?

Even if the first round gets pushed to Friday, the LPGA Tour and LET will hopefully finish the two rounds on time. But danger will be waiting on Saturday and Sunday. As per the weather forecast, the organizers predict morning showers at the Dundonald Links with a 38% chance of precipitation and wind speed at 18-20 mph.

Similarly, on the supposedly final day of the Women’s Scottish Open, morning showers will follow on Sunday, August 18. On both days, they predicted the intensity of dying as the day passed, making it feasible to play in the wet conditions. However, because of the cloudy sky, darkness may become another cause to delay the tournament to Monday.

As the weather remains unpredictable, it is better to visit Dundonald Links with an umbrella and rainboots, not to get soaked by the heavy showers!
