So how long have you been following the sport of golf? Well, however long it may be you definitely didn’t know what we have brought to you today. I mean, there are secrets always getting revealed in the landscape of the sports industry but what this PGA Tour pro recently said takes the cake here. What do you think goes into a golfer’s mind when deciding which tournaments to play in? Their schedule? The place or even their health right? No!
According to Michael Kim, golfers often don’t call the shots when it comes to their tournament schedule as their wives sometimes take the lead. As already established, golfers consider factors like course design and past success when choosing where to play, however, sometimes they go with what their partner prefers. “Players choose which tournaments to play based on a variety of factors. Course, past performances, the city, vibe, etc, are all pretty regular stuff. But something not as obvious is that wives can have a big influence. “Some wives tell the player that he needs to add a certain tournament to the schedule whether he likes the place or not lol.”, said the golfer. So does that mean Scottie Scheffler also listens to his wife when making these decisions? Maybe so.
The golfer also elaborated on how smart tournament organizers recognize this and prepare in advance for these special guests and by treating families to special amenities and unique experiences they make their wives feel welcome as much as the players themselves. “Savvy tournament directors make sure the wives are really well taken care of with activities and events to make the tournament as attractive to everyone in the family not just the players”, he explained.

One of these organizers is The Worldwide Tech Open in Cabo formerly held in Cancun which never fails to deliver the perfect environment for families, per the golfer. “Usually, the Worldwide Tech Open in Cabo (used to be Cancun) does a great job with activities for the family. LA tournament, Napa all do a great job. It’s changed over the years as tournament directors and sponsors have changed”, Kim said, but it’s not only this, as the golfer has also recently been commenting on the PGA Tour’s sponsorship debate.

Are PGA Tour golfers really letting their wives dictate their tournament schedules?
Have an interesting take?
We all know that the PGA Tour’s sponsorship exemption policy has sparked a heated debate among players and Michael Kim is taking center stage as he aims at the pros, Justin Thomas and Max Homa. Kim jokingly took a jab at Thomas and Homa and said on his social media that he is not very happy with his fellow golfers. “I’m more annoyed at Max Homa and Justin Thomas. Just stay home and watch the Dodgers and Bama so I can play, goddammit.” This may seem like a lighthearted comment but it is masked by a deeper frustration among fringe players who argue that high-profile exemptions affect the competition.
But it didn’t end just there as Kim also expanded on the controversy by acknowledging the important role sponsorships play in the sport. “These companies sign an eight-figure cheque,” Kim stated. “They can have four out of 80 spots to control.” The exemption debate has raised a lot of questions on fair play and has left fans and players wondering if the PGA will adjust its stance to support the newcomers.
