Traditions and customs are an integral part of every sport, especially golf. While some of these practices are unrolled in a more generalized manner, other conventions can be particularly associated with an entity. With reference to the latter, the elemental role of Rory McIlroy in golf has allowed him to be affiliated with many traditions on the course.
However, as the PGA Tour pros prepared for the $9 million Scottish Open, McIlroy relinquished one such tradition—an accessory. And the lack of this accessory on the course sparked a massive wave amongst the fans. After all, the golf world had come to link it with the star every time he would gear up and step onto the course!

Less than a day is left for the Genesis Scottish Open to officially spread its wings at the Renaissance Golf Club. Among many illustrious names, the Northern Irishman Rory McIlroy is also set to compete at the event. Given the esteem of the tournament, it is only natural for the golfers to desire to perform their best on the greens. Hence, the practice rounds at the golf club have already begun.
McIlroy has kicked off the gears of his drill as well on the close-cropped field. However, the astonishing part of the golfer’s practice was not his swing but rather the unaccustomed look he carried. In the clip posted by the PGA Tour on Instagram, the 4-time major winner can be seen unaccompanied by a fan favorite accessory: his cap.

The golfer has been associated with the accessory for a very long time now, all thanks to his never leaving his headgear behind. However, this time, during the warm-up, observers saw him flaunting his salt-and-pepper hair without his cap.
It isn’t odd for golfers to take off their caps. But, in the context of McIlroy, the hatless look appeared a lot different than his normal on-course get-up. Even the PGA Tour acknowledged the same through their caption. They wrote, “A rare hatless Rory.” Meanwhile, McIlroy’s fans did not seem to agree with this statement. Many of them even brought up his Ryder Cup look in their arguments!
Fans pen down opinionated remarks with regard to McIlroy’s unconventional look
Since Rory McIlroy’s new look highlighted the omission of a cap, it garnered a lot of attention. While it is true that usually the golfer does not sport this look, fans were quick to remind everyone of McIlroy’s Ryder Cup appearances. Golf enthusiasts believed that it was not unusual for the 2014 PGA Championship winner to play hatless. They wrote:
“Ryder cup he usually wears no hat”
“Rare as in every Ryder Cup”
Others believed it was McIlroy’s way of informing people that he was gearing up for the Ryder Cup, which is still weeks away. They commented:
“Prepping for Ryder Cup mode”
“Ryder Rory gearing up”
“Ryder cup must be soon…”

While some fans were focused on the PGA Tour Pro’s Ryder Cup semblance, others couldn’t help but compare him to various characters. One user drew a resemblance to the main antagonist of the comedy movie Happy Gilmore. He said, “Looking more like Shooter McGavin every day.” Another compared him to the famous British sitcom and said, “Mr Bean“.
One remark, in particular, called out the similarity between McIlroy and his dad. The handle said, “Starting to look a lot like his Dad.” Amidst all the emphasis on the professional’s look, a couple of fans shifted their attention to McIlroy’s swing. They said, “God I love his swing so much“, and “That swing is art.”
