The Ryder Cup is over now with the Europeans once again stealing the thunder and beating the Americans in Rome. But the drama and theories related to it cease to stop. While this year, despite much debate one LIV golfer, Brooks Koepka made it to the prestigious event, there are still many people who believe that defectors don’t deserve to be there.
However, on the other side, there is one Ryder Cup legend who thinks that besides Koepka, no other LIV Golfer deserved to be on the team, especially Patrick Reed. While Reed is getting ready for the last of two tournaments of this season of LIV Golf – Jeddah and Miami, he has been brutally attacked by this PGA Tour pro.

Ever since the American golf world was divided owing to the formation of LIV Golf, there have been a thousand supporting and nonsupporting arguments on the matter of the Ryder Cup. While this time, even the presence of Koepka couldn’t save team US, fans have wished to see other LIV Golfers on the team.
But PGA Tour pro, Hunter Mahan who has played in many Ryder Cups, shares opposite views on the matter and is very much in opposition to seeing Patrick Reed on the Ryder team. He recently appeared in Golf Digest’s The Loop podcast and revealed his thoughts on the subject. Mahan said in the podcast, “I don’t think any of those guys really had a chance to make the team. I just don’t. Reed’s just not that guy anymore. I think he was when we were at the Gleneagles with him.”
He continued “I think we all thought he was turning over a corner of his sort of sheltering, and sort of walls, I thought we broke down his walls, and I thought he was really going to start to become a part of the tour in a family perspective, right.” Clearly, it seems like Reed hurt his PGA Tour buddies when he ditched them for LIV.

Mahan thinks getting defectors in Ryder team would not have worked
Through his statement, Mahan seems to be hinting that Reed leaving behind the Tour made things unstable. He adds “For whatever reason, it just sort of, it’s kind of they’re up again, and sort of crumbled. Though always if I’m, who knows what’s going to happen, they were never going to be a part of this team. It was just not going to work.”

Reed never got the chance to play in the Cup alongside other defectors who were in the race for Ryder and were very vocal about this dream. Patrick Reed is gearing up for the remaining tournaments on the LIV Schedule of this year. After two more events, the season will be over. But this attack from Mahan will certainly leave a mark on him.
