Rory McIlroy was among the first names from the European team to qualify for the Ryder Cup. Being one of the eldest, he will be bringing much experience and confidence to the ground. And though there are quite a few names added to the list, the Irishman is confident of them.
Two weeks ago, the team was finalized with the Captain’s picks and a relatively new name in professional golf made it to the 12-member squad. And aside from this big feat, this new kid on the street has also earned the approval of Rory McIlroy himself.

Securing a spot on the Ryder Cup was not an easy task but 23-year-old Ludvig Aberg accomplished this dream recently. In a race that was already filled with seasoned players fighting for a spot, Aberg enhanced his chances by winning the Omega European Masters two weeks ago. With his impressive performance, Aberg has also impressed McIlroy.
Rory, who recently appeared in Golf.com’s podcast Subpar, shared his thoughts on how impressed he is by Aberg’s skills. “I haven’t I haven’t gotten to play with him yet. I mean, my longest conversation with Ludvig probably being like five minutes on the fitness trailer during the Canadian Open but everyone that I’ve spoken to that’s played with them says he’s an absolute stud.”
McIlroy said though he hasn’t seen him play live, he catches his game highlights. “He drives the shit out of the golf ball apparently you know, and just some of the highlights that I’ve seen of him. He’s a pretty dig-ish guy with longest levers but his swing looks very much under control.”
When captain Luke Donald announced Aberg as one of his picks, there was no surprise considering his recent performance.

McIlroy is getting tough competition from Aberg at the BMW PGA Championship
Continuing the praise, McIlroy added that his swing game will be a big plus for their team in Rome. “I mean you look at his numbers off the tee and you look at the way you look at the way the the course is going to be set up in Rome.” Aberg is currently playing at the BMW PGA Championship and is giving McIlroy a run for his money at the tournament.
In fact, at the end of the first day, Aberg was placed tied 12th on the back of 4-under 68. McIlroy was meanwhile way behind at tied 65th after an even par round. McIlroy, who is looking to bring back the Cup home, will definitely find a good ally and student in Aberg.
