The Argentine professional golfer, Emiliano Grillo, won Charles Schwab Challenge. But his win also came with a bittersweet moment. He had to endure the chaos of one of the rarest times of his life before receiving his award.

Emiliano Grillo was ahead of Adam Schenk and Harry Hall by two strokes on the 18th tee box as his tournament came to a close. He only needed to hit the ball and send it toward the green. But then something unexpected happened. His tee shot got into the stream within the penalty area and rolled for minutes before amazingly coming to a stop because of a stone. PGA Tour shared the video of this mishap on its official Twitter account. The caption on the video reads, “Bizarre scenes on 18. Leader Emiliano Grillo’s tee shot finds a water stream and takes five minutes to eventually come to a stop. Grillo takes a penalty stroke and plays where the golf ball entered the stream.”

The video speaks for itself. This is undoubtedly bizarre. The time it took for the ball to finally stop was almost five minutes. The aqueduct’s stream was so powerful that it eventually carried Grillo’s ball toward the tee box. Grillo eagerly awaited the ball to stop rolling so he could try to hit it.

PGA Tour pro Emiliano Grillo secured a dramatic win

Emiliano Grillo became the 2023 Charles Schwab Challenge champion. But it was not an easy victory for him. He was required to take the penalty stroke after the strange water incident in accordance with the rules, and after making a double bogey, he eventually tied Adam Schenk and Harry Hall at 8 under going into the playoff. Schenk avoided the water obstacle by hitting the ball directly into the green. He now only needed a 15-foot putt to win the competition. However, he missed the putt.

Hall, on the other hand, hit his tee shot, but eventually, his shot also got into the water in the penalty area. He bogeyed the hole and finished in a tie for third place with Scottie Scheffler at 7-under. Finally, Grillo and Schenk competed in the playoffs. Both players missed their birdie attempts on hole 18 and proceeded to hole 16. Grillo made his winning putt after his tee shot came within five feet of the hole.

“The playing, all the hours practicing, the effort from my family. It makes you think when you started playing all the emotions come through your head,” said Grillo as per Golf Digest.

It’s been eight years since his last PGA Tour victory at the Fortinet Championship in 2015. This victory is perhaps the nicest for him after all the obstacles and waiting. He reportedly received $1,566,000 in prize money for his triumph.
