The former world number one has already done great, but his WGC-Match Play experience is having an impact on his career. Thomas has already proved himself to be great at match-play after playing in the Ryder and Presidents Cup. However, the two-time PGA champion has opted out of the next week’s WGC-Match Play event. The event is scheduled to be held at Austin Country Club and the venue is definitely the reason behind Thomas’ decision to skip the event. While speaking to the press at the Valspar Championship, Thomas expressed his love for Innisbrook while having exactly the opposite feelings toward Austin Country Club.
"I've played it six times and I've played it really bad five of them."

Thomas said,” [Innisbrook] is a place I love. I really, really love the golf course, I feel like I have a really good chance to win there if I go play. I just, I simply don’t feel that way about Austin Country Club. It’s nothing against the course; I’ve just, I’ve played it six times and I’ve played it really bad five of them.” Considering his experiences at Austin Country Club, Thomas thinks it is a good decision to stay away from the place, having a negative impact on him.

Thomas surely has done well in 2023. It has been nothing great, but surely a good run. After ending the Valspar Championship at the 12th position, Thomas’ Austin Country Club decision was surely unexpected. The decision surely took the golf world by surprise. Thomas is not alone as Justin Rose is also passing on the event. Thomas’ reason is certainly because of his struggles at the venue.
There is definitely a strange symmetry between Thomas’ performance for Team USA. He has scored a whopping 1712 points for the Americans over the course of two Ryder Cups and three Presidents Cups, and his performance at Austin Country Club, where he has only made it past the round of 16 there once in six attempts. What happens in the future remains to be seen.
