The 2023 Wyndham Championship is well underway at the Sedgefield Country Club in North Carolina and many noteworthy players have made the cut into the weekend. As the regular season comes to its close, many golfers will need a good finish at the tournament to qualify for the FedEx Cup alive.

With the aim of keeping their season alive, many golfers, including Justin Thomas, have surprised the golf world with their performance at the tournament leaving the community much curious as to their chances for the playoffs. Let’s find out more.

Justin Thomas and his notable peers in the Wyndham Championship

While Russel Henley is currently leading as the event enters the weekend, close on his tail are many big names from the PGA Tour. Even with a satisfying performance at the Wyndham Championship, the prize money of $18 million from the FedEx Cup may prove to be a slippery dream of sorts for some top golfers.

Leading the list of top guns is Justin Thomas. The American pro golfer has had a bumpy ride of sorts in the current season. The two-time major winner will look to finish with a much-better weekend performance. He will be able to make the playoffs outright if he completes the tournament at solo third or better. He would not need any help from the field.

Next on the list is Adam Scott who is keen to join his Aussie counterparts on the FedEx standings. Being one of the two players who made the postseason every year since the inception of the playoffs in 2007 along with Matt Kuchar, the Australian golfer would look to finish huge with a two-way tie for 2nd or better to qualify without any help from the field.

Entering the week at 76th in the FedEx Cup standings is none other than Shane Lowry, who can make the playoffs if he finishes solo at 3rd or better. If he gets some help from the field, he can manage to do the same with a two-way tie for 23rd or better.

Coming in strong is Billy Horschel who is currently in second place behind Henley at the tournament. The American pro did not have many options as he entered the event 116th in the FedEx Cup standings. He needs a victory to qualify without any help from the field. Starting off the event at 97th on the FedEx rankings, Gary Woodland would need a solo second or better to advance without any help from the field. If he is to receive any help, the pro golfer needs a minimum finish of a two-way tie at third or better.

A shaky performance at the Wyndham Championship by the PGA Tour pros

The top players have had a rough season with their hopes of making the FedEx Cup playoffs pinned on their performance at the Wyndham Championship. Currently at T21, Thomas opened the tournament at even par with 70 in round 1 while making the cut at 5-under par 65 on the second day. Scott has placed himself at T31 with scores of 65 and 71 in the first two, rounds finishing at a total of 4-under-par while Lowry is behind him with scores of 68 and 69 making the cut at 3-under-par.

Horschel is hot in the standings at 11-under-overall with scores of 67 and 62 in the first two rounds placing himself at second just a shot behind Henley who is leading the scoreboard. He will look to beat everyone on the list including Woodland who is currently at 40th finishing R1 and R2 at 70 and 67 respectively.
