In golf, many have often pondered the path to greatness. Who is a legend in golf? Who is the best of the best in their generation? Is it true that the person with the most wins? Or the one with the lowest score? Well, Jack Nicklaus sure has an opinion on it. In 2010, in an interview with Golf Digest, the 73-time PGA Tour winner revealed what stood in the way of a golfer’s dream to be the best.

Many fans consider Nicklaus one of the best to play on the course. But does he fit his own criteria of being the best of his generation? And perhaps of all time? Let’s see what he has to say.

During his interview, Nicklaus was talking about the chances he had at a Grand Slam in the sport, and the reporter asked him if that was his dream. A golf pro was said to have achieved a grand slam if he won all the major championships in a single season. To date, only Bobby Jones has done so, having won the four major events in 1930.

Nicklaus didn’t need to think about the question for a second. “Let’s put it this way,” he said. “My ultimate goal… [is] to be remembered as the best golfer who ever played.” The golf legend added that he was certain that every golfer wished that, including the likes of Sam Snead and his rival, Arnold Palmer.

But it wasn’t as simple as just hoping for it. Nicklaus claimed that there were two ways that someone could achieve this feat. “One would be obviously to win them all in one year,” he said, referring to the Grand Slam. “Or to win more major championships than anybody else.”

So, who is the best in Nicklaus’s opinion?

According to the golden bear’s words, Jones and he shared the best spot. Throughout his career, he has won the most majors (18). And since Jones was the only player to win all four in the same season, he too falls on Nicklaus’ list.

Where then is the fan favorite, Tiger Woods? Woods is the only modern-era golfer to have won all four majors consecutively. But despite doing so, he wasn’t able to win them all in a single season. In 2000, he won the US Open, British Open, and PGA Championship, followed by the Masters in 2001.
