Phil Mickelson, the 6-time major championship winner is one of the greats of the sport. In 2021 he won the PGA Champions to win both, his 6th major and also set the record as the oldest golfer to ever win a major. Many also know him for his 45 PGA Tour wins and in the past few months, he has been known as the star who defected to LIV Golf. Besides this, Phil’s teammates also know him as something additional: a prankster.

Phil Mickelson tricks the Scotsman
Phil’s favorite person to prank was Colin Montgomerie. The now 59-year-old golfer plays in the PGA Tour Champions, but back in the day, Phil and Colin often played together. Mickelson once said, “One of my favourite targets is Monty because Monty takes it great, he really does.“

Back in 1997 Phil and Colin were both playing at the Arnold Palmer Invitational in Orlando. Monty was unimpressed with his tee times and had said in an article, “I’m teeing off early. I am teeing off late but here I am No. 3 in the world and this is ridiculous.” Phil came across the article in a golf magazine and instantly hatched a prank.
Mickelson got hold of some paper with the PGA Tour letterhead on it. He typed out a letter to Monty and thereafter put it in his locker. The letter stated that the PGA Tour has held a meeting and found a solution to Colin’s tee times. It was, “Win a f***ing tournament!” He signed the letter off with, “Yours sincerely, PGA Tour Policy Board”.
Phil takes after his mom when it comes to pranks

Phil went up to Montgomerie the next day while he was practicing and immediately knew that he had already read the letter. Colin was in an off mood and was constantly mumbling to his caddy going “eerrrr eerrr.” Lefty went up to him and asked him “Did you get my note?” Only then did Monty realize that the letter was a prank. Colin lightened up and said, “It was you. It was you.” The duo went on to have a good laugh about it.
Phil also explained that he gets his “humorous side” from his mom who often pranked them as kids. “My mom is the one who brings a water pistol into the movie theater, squirts it into the crowd and points to us (laughing),” he said.
