The golf world has been demanding a merger between the PGA Tour and the Breakaway League to see some good golf. However, the release of the 2025 schedule by Jay Monahan, with no LIV Golf in it, crushes the hopes of the fans. However, it looks like there might be one last chance after all.
According to Eamon Lynch’s report from Golfweek, the PGA Tour and LIV Golf players will compete against each other in a TV match in Las Vegas. In the match that is scheduled to be held during mid-December, two of the greatest PGA Tour stars, Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy, will be going against LIV Golf heroes, Brooks Koepka and Bryson DeChambeau.
“I’m thrilled to partner with Scottie in what promises to be an exciting duel against Bryson and Brooks in Vegas this December. This isn’t just a contest between some of golf’s major champions; it’s an event designed to energize the fans,” said the former World No. 2, confirming his presence. However, when the PGA Tour was asked about their presence in the TV match, they declined to make any comment on it, which indicates that they will not be involved. If there is one thing that could benefit the PGA Tour from this, it is the potential rise in golf viewership, which has been declining ever since 2022.

The match will be produced by Bryan Zuriff’s BZ Entertainment, which is responsible for the inception of The Match series, and this will be the ninth one. It is funded by RedBird IMI and former CNN chief Jeff Zucker. According to sources, the players who will be competing in Las Vegas will only receive an appearance fee, with no prize money.

While the players are all set to go against each other, what is the current status of the PIF merger that was promised 15 months ago?
There is still no deadline for the merger
The PGA Tour and PIF announced a merger agreement back in June 2023. However, nothing has been finalized yet, and the negotiations continue despite the December 31, 2023, deadline. When asked about the status in Atlanta during the Tour Championship, Jay Monahan confessed that there is still no new deadline.

However, he added that there have been advancements in the discussions taking place consistently. “I think if it doesn’t happen soon, then honestly, I think PIF and the Saudis are going to have to look at alternative options, right? I’d say that’s the next step in all of this if something doesn’t get done,” McIlroy said. Even the players by now are frustrated with the wait.
