The world of golf suffered a big loss just hours ago when legendary British golfer Dale Reid passed away on November 8. At the age of 64, Reid lost her life to cancer. She died in Townsville, Queensland, Australia, where she had moved after retirement.

The loss of the 21-time LET champion hit the entire golf community hard, and some more than others. Among those who were completely shaken and devastated by the news was none other than LPGA legend Annika Sorenstam herself, who couldn’t help but pay homage to Reid through her latest post.

Dale Reid, one of the founding pillars of women’s European golf, inspired many young girls to pursue the sport through her career on the Ladies European Tour. Moreover, the late golfer was a guiding light for many of her successors in golf and helped them find the right direction through her low score (of 58) records as well as her consistency on the LET, which led her to still hold the most top-10 finishes record on the Tour.

Undoubtedly, Reid has inspired thousands, and Sorenstam is undoubtedly one of those many. Like Reid, the LPGA great too possesses admirable qualities and tries to help and guide others as much as possible, which perhaps she gets from the inspiration of the fallen star.

Her loss certainly hit Annika Sorenstam hard, and paying tribute to Reid and her sporting spirit, the 10-time major winner took to Twitter (now X) and wrote, “Sorry to hear. Dale was a fierce competitor. Her humor and personality will be missed. RIP”.

Dale Reid lived an inspiring life. Born in Ladybank, Fife, Scotland, the professional golfer enjoyed her first victory at the Carlsberg Championship in 1980. After that, she won many other tournaments and also played in the Solheim Cups. In the history of LET, Reid was arguably one of the most successful players.

Besides professional golf, Reid also had some amateur wins to her name. In 2004, she won the Scottish Amateur Open Stroke Play Championship. In 2005, she took home the title at the Irish Amateur Open Stroke Play Championship. Her death has undoubtedly left a big hole in the entire golfing community, especially for her former league, which, when news hit, also released a statement expressing their sorrow.

Reid’s loss has broken many hearts in the golf world

The LET, where Reid spent over 25 years playing, was one of the first to express their heartbreak over the loss of one of their own. In a statement, the tour expressed its grief and paid homage to the 21-time LET winner. “Everyone at the LET is deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Dale Reid OBE,” they wrote sorrowfully. “Our thoughts and condolences are with Dale’s family and friends.”

The Tour wasn’t the only one to mourn her loss either. This year’s European team Solheim Cup captain, Suzann Pettersen, also expressed her ache for the fallen golfer. She said that Dale was a source of courage and faith in her life. Sharing a picture of the 2002 Solheim Cup team, Pettersen highlighted Reid in a heart-shaped mark and wrote, “My first captain.”
