May 22, 2017: Billy Horschel was overwhelmed with emotions as he picked up his first victory in two years at the 2017 AT&T Byron Nelson. However, “his own challenges” exceeded far beyond a mere lack of wins, which his wife Brittany revealed the next day, in a heartbreaking confession. “I write this nervously, skeptically, but also proudly because I have embraced the woman I have become over the past year…One year ago, I began a journey to a healthy me, mentally and physically. I will keep his simple, ‘I am an alcoholic.’ I say that now without shame,” she confessed. But the battle to that confession was uphill, involving one too many screaming matches…
As a new mother to the couple’s first daughter, Skylar, a stay-at-home wife with Billy mostly away on tour, and brushing aside the pain of a miscarriage in 2013, Brittany justified her alcohol addiction the best she could. “The evening glass of wine turned into the evening bottle of wine, to the happy hour drink, to the day filled with a constant stream of vodka. The bottles once again found their homes in the nooks and crannies of my house and various hotel rooms. I was out of control. But I had all the excuses, “It’s the stress of being a new mom,” “my husband is out of town”, “my husband is in town,” “blah blah blah blah. You all know how it goes. I was able to care for my daughter, but in no way how she deserved. I checked off all the boxes of what I was supposed to do. But I was just in a constant fog…” she wrote in a 2017 speech.
However, her husband and their family members soon started noticing the drastic spiral, and thanks to a timely intervention, Brittany has been sober for seven years. She spent almost three months in a treatment center in South Florida. And this triumph reflected in Billy Horschel’s own professional journey as well…

In an October 22 interview with Gary Williams for the Five Clubs’ YouTube channel, the 37-year-old talked about his 2024 season highlighted by his BMW PGA Championship victory with a clutch eagle in the nail-biting second playoff against Rory McIlroy. But how does he do it all this? Well, the golfer’s biggest inspiration comes from his wife, Brittany.
The golfer revealed how watching his wife overcome struggles with alcoholism has made him reflect on his own life. “Brittany being out of, we have years, um, seeing all the changes she’s made in her life, the changes I’ve had to make in my life, um, and grow as a person. I think, you know, obviously, it, I’m a lot more of showing an emotional side that is a vulnerable side than I have been before,” said the golfer.
To this, Williams asked a profound question eliciting the most and heartfelt reaction from Billy Horschel. “The things that are vulnerable for you, her honesty has got to have made you a stronger person, has it not?” the host asked.
“Her honesty has got to have made you a stronger person. She challenges me every day. We have to communicate a lot, uh, we have to communicate better than we ever have in our relationship,” he said, and also revealed how a newfound openness—thanks to Brittany’s encouragement—has helped him both in the professional and private space…
“There’s times when I’m holding things in. Like, you know, she [Brittany] may frustrate me on certain things or I may not be happy with how certain things are going. And she pushes me to open up to her about that, which is a growing sense for me but then it allows me to be more open in a public atmosphere and not so much just in a private setting…which is a good thing because I think we live in a world that we’ve always, you know, whether it be man or woman we’ve always kept everything to ourselves whether it be in a public or private setting and now we’re we live in a world where the more we can share in a public sense and and public way, it can not only help yourself grow and move forward…but it can affect and be a benefit to someone,” the 8 PGA Tour winner mentioned.
