The Taiwan Swinging Skirts LPGA debuted in the year 2011 with the name Sunrise LPGA Taiwan Championship in Yangmei. The event that took place at the Sunrise Golf & Country Club has been an integral part of the sports culture of the Republic of China ever since. However, things seldom go according to plan in life and the tournament suffered a similar fate.
When an event is scheduled to take place on any of the Tours, rare are the cases when they are canceled or abandoned. However, one such instance took place in the golf community as the LPGA event was called off, citing certain “factors,” much to the surprise of the sporting world!

The tournament was scheduled to be held at the Miramar Golf Club in the city of New Taipei, Chinese Taipei from October 26-29. However, LPGA came forward stating how the event, which saw its last champion in Nelly Korda, was called off all the while mentioning how another event would likely take the place of the same.
An announcement was made by the golfing body with the Swinging Skirts Golf Foundation on March 23. As per the notice, the two went ahead to cancel the 2023 edition of the Taiwan Swinging Skirts LPGA after coming to a mutual agreement, owing to “operational factors.” Replacing the competition was the Maybank Championship on the same date, boasting a prize purse of $3 million.
Continuing with the announcement, the women’s golf circuit expressed its gratitude to Chairman Wang along with the GAROC and the Swinging Skirts Foundation team. Elaborating on the same, the Tour went ahead to state how they have provided many an opportunity for the various players for the past decade all the while pointing out their “continued dedication for growing” the game amongst women in Chinese Taipei. They ended the announcement by mentioning the fans and volunteers, especially those who “have supported the event in its history.”
However, if one were to look behind, it would be possible to see that this is not the first time that the tournament has been canceled, let alone being the first Asian one in 2023.

Unlike the announcement that came out last year, the 2023 one does not mention any future plans for the event. The one released in 2022 had mentioned “looking forward to returning in 2023.” Moreover, the competition this year would be the second Asian event to be called off following the Blue Bay LPGA (another event in China), which was originally scheduled for March.
