Things are heating up at the alternate event of the week! While most fans must be busy watching the 2025 Arnold Palmer Invitational, others would also be keeping an eye on the Puerto Rico Open. And they would know that the tournament on the Caribbean Island has been on fire. Unfortunately, the heat was put out by an unfortunate incident.

After some amazing strokeplay that saw 3 golfers hitting a 9-under, the play at the Grand Reserve Golf Club has been suspended. Turns out, the weather has played an integral part in the delay. The PGA Tour Communications account tweeted “The first round of the Puerto Rico Open was suspended due to rain at 12:27 p.m. local time”. For anyone living in the Eastern zone, the play was suspended at 11:27 A.M. (EST). It took a while for them to provide an update again, but they did.

Around 45 minutes later, the Communications account of the PGA Tour shared another tweet that read, “The first round of the Puerto Rico Open is scheduled to resume at 1:45 p.m. local time”. Thankfully, play resumed at 12:45 P.M. (EST) and fans were able to watch Kevin Roy surpass Chris Gotterup’s score in the first round.

Round suspensions and long delays at the Puerto Rico Open

It’s the second year in a row where a round of the Puerto Rico Open was disrupted. In 2024, the tournament’s first round was also delayed by nearly 2 hours after rain took over the course. This led to a part of the round being postponed to the second day. Only time will tell if the first round of the 2025 Puerto Rico Open faces the same fate.

That was not even the last of the weather issues in the event in 2024. Round two was also postponed as the course didn’t have sufficient natural light to complete the 18 holes of all the players. The second round was postponed to Saturday, March 9, 2024. Fortunately, the rest of the tournament went smoothly and gave all the pros enough time to compete for the title. That helped Brice Garnett win the 2024 Puerto Rico Open.
