Can Russell Henley really crush Bryson DeChambeau's patriotic dreams after his shocking LIV Golf exit?

“Every high has a low!” This certainly reflects Bryson DeChambeau’s luck over the past two months. He defeated Rory McIlroy by one stroke at the US Open last month. However, he failed to make the cut at The Open Championship. With a score of 9-over, he had to fly back home from the Royal Troon after Friday’s round.

Will his early exit from the last major of the season shatter his dreams of representing the US at Bethpage at the Ryder Cup in 2025? Keegan Bradley, the captain, is to choose players for the team from the PGA Tour and LIV Golf. However, players ranked below DeChambeau in the OWGR top 10 might pose a significant challenge to his inclusion in the team.

Russell Henley ended the 2023 season with a 24th-place finish on the OWGR list. But his gameplay significantly improved in the 2024 season, which propelled the 35-year-old to the 20th rank. Now, especially with an impressive performance after a grueling third round at the Royal Troon, Henley has not only climbed up the leaderboard but is also in contention to break into the OWGR top 10.

Earlier, he was below the Top 25, but after carding six birdies at the penultimate round, Henley finished the round with an impressive 5-under 66. He is currently tied for the second position with five other pros.

Currently, at 153.66, he will have 213.66 points in his name. While Bryson DeChambeau is currently at 194.69. In that case, Henley will undoubtedly surpass him on the list, and Patrick Cantlay too, who is at 7. If that happens, the chances of the Scientist playing at Bethpage become increasingly slimmer.

And well, if Henley grabs the momentum and gets better, who knows, ends up winning the Major, he will get 100 points. This will land him at the seventh position straight, adding Viktor Hovland to the list of players he surpassed. But the question is, what happened to DeChambeau that he failed to keep his momentum for the Majors?

DeChambeau’s lackluster performance at 2024 The Open Championship

After an exceptional victory at Pinehurst 2, the Crushers GC Captain failed to go under par in either of the two rounds at Royal Troon. He opened the final Major of the season with a bogey on Thursday. This was followed by two back-to-back bogeys on the Gyaws and Dunure. The only highlight of DeChambeau’s Scottish outing was when he scored an eagle on the 16th hole. His overall performance was not up to par.

After carding a total of ten bogeys and a double bogey in the first two rounds, DeChambeau knew he could not make it further. But he was content with the performance he gave. “I just didn’t have things go my way; like I said at the beginning of the week, you put marbles in a blender, and you shake it up, and that’s kind of what happens out here,” said the LIV Golfer! Even though his last major of the season did not go as planned, the LIV golfer put forth stellar performances at the other three majors, beginning with a T6 at the Masters, followed by the runner-up position at Valhalla.
