Is the Wyndham Championship becoming the most cursed event on the PGA Tour?

The 2024 Wyndham Championship has descended into chaos! As the PGA Tour’s regular-season finale, this tournament was supposed to be a nail-biter. But this year, it has turned into a struggle. Well, as you’re well aware, Hurricane Debby’s rampage brought bad weather. The storm forced the tournament to start a day late on Friday. However, its departure revealed a new storm was brewing.

The initial delay was just the beginning, as repeated play suspensions and the venue being initially closed to spectators also pushed the event to the brink. Players seem to had enough too, and the growing list of WDs was proof. Notable absences included Harris English, the 4-time PGA Tour winner, who withdrew from the Wyndham Championship citing a back injury, and then it was CT Pan who bid adieu to the event in the middle of the second round.

Furthermore, Aaron Baddeley and Parker Coody followed suit. They both took off after the second round was suspended due to darkness on Saturday. Additionally, the cut line proved cruel for several big-name players, dealing another blow to the tournament’s already fragile state.

Golf stars such as Jordan Spieth, Justin Rose, and Robert MacIntyre headlined the list of those who fell short. Jordan Spieth’s departure was a shock. He had a strong start with a 68-71, but a heartbreaking collapse on the final two holes cost him a spot in the next round. He bogeyed both holes, falling short of the cut line. Moreover, Rose and MacIntyre also bowed out. MacIntyre’s missed cut was his 10th in 22 starts this season, a puzzling slump for the world No. 16. Just last month, he won the Scottish Open, taking his count to two victories in a breakthrough year.

Now that the tournament is on the edge, the PGA Tour has made a significant change to the schedule. Due to weather-related delays and suspensions, players will not be regrouped for the third and fourth rounds, a rare departure from standard procedure. Third-round tee times are set for 7:50–9:40 a.m. ET. Players will tee off in groups of three on holes 1 and 10. With the event already behind schedule, there’s a growing possibility that the champion might not be crowned until Monday, depending on how the weather cooperates.

Weather threatens to push the Wyndham Championship conclusion into an extra day

In the event of continued inclement weather, the PGA Tour has a proven track record of adapting and finding ways to complete its events. If the forecast shows no signs of improvement, the tournament could potentially follow in the footsteps of the Cognizant Classic earlier this year, which was completed on Monday.

Moreover, due to suspension on Saturday, 20 players are left on the course to finish the second round on Sunday morning. The weather forced nearly half of the tournament’s competitors to finish their second round on Saturday, with the remaining players returning to the course on Sunday to complete their rounds.

With the weather refusing to relent, the Wyndham Championship’s conclusion is now likely to spill over into Monday. Do you agree with the same? Share what you think in the comment section below.
