When a professional golfer takes a shot, there are facilities on the greens to measure distance and accuracy. But have you ever wondered how a golfer determines whether their swing is good or bad? Experience plays a significant role, but another tool helps them understand: a lanyard.

This recently came to light at LIV Golf Nashville, where Abraham Ancer was seen using a lanyard with a glove to perform drills after the second round. Rachel Drummond shared a video on X, showcasing Ancer from Range Access. In the video, Ancer was practicing swings with the glove under his left armpit, connected to a lanyard around his neck.

Pro golfers often pair a lanyard with a glove and keep it under their arm. If the glove drops while making a shot, they can determine that the swing isn’t perfect. This technique helps them keep their elbows straight and take full advantage of their body’s geometry. Right-handed golfers usually place the glove under their left armpit, allowing them to utilize their back muscles and right hand effectively to achieve a perfect swing. Additionally, this technique helps them determine the optimal distance to keep between their hands before making a shot.

A lanyard usually costs between $15 and $18, and it’s fascinating to see how this small item helps the golfers in million-dollar tournaments like LIV Golf Nashville. Golfers are allowed to use lanyards during breaks between rounds, but not while competing in the actual round. If a golfer feels they aren’t hitting well, they can use this drill.

Ancer was leading the leaderboard after the first round; however, he is now at T27 with a total of 139, 3 under par. Are there other pros who like to practice this drill? Absolutely, there are!

Which other pros use a lanyard just like Abraham Ancer?

There are certain ways to use the lanyard drill. The PGA Tour once showcased a video of Collin Morikawa, who uses this drill when facing challenges on the greens. According to Morikawa, practicing with the lanyard helps him hit better and straighter shots shortly after. While Morikawa utilizes this practice just like Abraham Ancer, he also revealed some pros use a towel in their underhand to practice the same. The very basic aim of a lanyard is to help keep golfers’ hands and bodies in sync.

Aside from Morikawa, another pro, Justin Rose also has his own ways of making full use of a lanyard. Rose usually connects a ball with the lanyard and keeps it between both elbows. This drill not only enhances his understanding of the body turn but also helps him gauge the appropriate distance between his hands. As he swings, applying pressure to the ball forces him to execute a proper body turn to the top.

While this seems like an important drill for the golfers to get back on track, do you believe Abraham Ancer can regain the lead using this practice? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
