Did Scheffler and Schauffele make the right call skipping the Olympics opening for the PGA Tour?

The quest for gold and glory has begun! The Americans have landed on French soil for the 2024 Paris Olympics. This year, the four incredible golfers chosen to represent the red, blue, and white are Wyndham Clark, Scottie Scheffler, Xander Schauffle, and Collin Morikawa. Out of which, the 1-time US Open winner and 2020 Open winner were present in City of Lights and enjoyed the opening ceremony.

However, the other two team members, the two major winners of the 2024 season, Schauffele and Scheffler, were nowhere to be seen. Where are the world no. 1 and no. 2 currently and why did they decide to skip the opening celebrations?

Before taking up his national duties, the last time the World No. 1 teed off was at the Open. As known, the outing at Troon saw him spiral down the leaderboard to T7 due to a bunch of missed putts. Letting bygones be bygones, the 28-year-old is ready to showcase his golf prowess at the Summer Olympics  and perhaps that’s why he made a resort two hours away from Paris his temporary abode.

His whereabouts were hidden until the former Chelsea player, John Terry, posted a photo with the 27-year-old golfer on his Instagram. According to the post, Scheffler has been staying in a luxurious resort in the Les Bordes area, which has two golf courses to help him prepare for the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Scheffler has never played at Le Golf National (the venue for the 2024 Olympics), as he was not a part of the 2018 Ryder Cup, so he would need all the assistance to familiarize himself with French greens. Furthermore, the 2024 Olympics will mark the debut of the World No. 1 in the quadrennial event. Hence, the pressure would be skyrocketing for Scheffler; nonetheless, he surely would come out of it to grab himself a win, as he has done for the majority of the season.

On the other hand, world no. 2 missed the grand ceremony of the Paris Olympics, as he may have been riding high on his Open Championship victory in Royal Troon. However, Xander Schauffele didn’t return home after his second major win. Where is he now?

Why did Xander Schauffele not go home?

Xander Schauffele may become the first-ever double Olympic golfer in the world. And to prepare for such a huge feat, the two-time major winner has taken a rest stop in Europe after winning the Claret Jug. Schauffele had revealed that he and his whole team, including his family, were excited for the Summer Olympics. More so, as his family couldn’t be there at the 2020 (2021) Tokyo Olympics because of COVID-19 restrictions.

With his family, world no. 2 has turned to a bit of vacation mode and just a few thousand miles away, he has been resting in Portugal. According to Maya Schauffele’s Instagram story, the couple was last enjoying their time at Soltroia Beach in Troia. They will soon head to Le Golf National.

The 9-time PGA Tour winner shared with Today’s Golfer about his plans and said, “I may pop in early and get some extra rounds in. It looks like you have to be really strategic around the property and place your shots smartly, so I’m really looking forward to getting over there early.” As the two top American golfers prepare for the 2024 Games, it will be interesting to see who will win the gold medal.
