The Farmers Insurance Open was all set to roll smoothly from January 22–25—at least, that was the plan. But Mother Nature had other ideas, throwing a wrench into the second round with some seriously wild weather.

Things took a turn during the second round, forcing the PGA Tour to hit pause. At 5:05 p.m. ET, the play was suspended due to high winds, as announced on their X handle: “Play suspended at 2:05 p.m. PT due to high winds during second round of Farmers Insurance Open.”

The first round went off without a hitch, with Swede Ludvig Aberg leading the leaderboard, but this isn’t how anyone imagined the second round would turn out to be. As per the previous forecast, the weather was expected to be sunny and clear, but “ideal” weather is nowhere to be found. Joel Dahmen who is currently at T5, summed it up perfectly, calling it “survival mode” out there.

“This is wild. I don’t know if I’ve ever played in Torry in this much wind before,” he shared, describing just how tough the conditions were. “We have sand and wind coming in from the east, and every now and then we get to switch off the ocean, which has been super strange today. Really difficult to play in, and this is just survival mode out here today.”

Take the par-5 13th hole, for example. Normally, it’s a spot where players aim to reach the green in two. Right now? Forget it.

“Theoretically, it’s my ball to be like, Definitely can’t reach into.” Dahmen explained, “We had 225 to cover to the fairway today, and I think I just did that. I mean, we got a blowing 25 in off the left, so I’m just happy I hit the fairway.”

Right now, winds at Torrey Pines are blowing ENE at 15 km/h, with gusts reaching up to 44 km/h. While there’s no rain in sight, those gusts are more than enough to throw everyone off their game. But don’t worry; the $9.3 million event will resume for the second round at 6:30 p.m. ET. Here’s hoping things calm down a bit—or at least don’t get any worse!

How about the rest of the tournament?

Well, if the forecast were to be trusted, we’d be talking about another smooth day at Torrey Pines. But we all know the reality. Still, let’s look ahead and see what the rest of the tournament might have in store.

Friday’s forecast actually looks pretty promising. Winds are expected to ease up to 11 km/h, with gusts reaching 24 km/h. No rain is on the radar, so players might finally catch a break. If all goes as planned, it could be the kind of day where the leaderboard sees some action, with players making the most of more manageable conditions.

Now, about the final round on Saturday—brace yourselves. Things are expected to take another turn for the worse. Temperatures will drop to a cooler 15°C, and the skies will be heavy with 84% cloud cover. Winds are set to pick up again, blowing at 17 km/h with gusts reaching a challenging 48 km/h. To make matters even tougher, there’s a 61% chance of rain. And while the probability of thunderstorms is relatively low at 12%, it’s still enough to keep everyone on edge.

Fans at Torrey Pines should pack an extra layer and maybe an umbrella, just in case. For the players, the final round could very well turn into a battle of patience and grit, as they face yet another test from Mother Nature. So buckle up—it’s going to be an exciting finish!
