Is Lexi Thompson's retirement a loss for golf, or a brave step towards personal well-being?

As the LPGA season winds down with the CME Group Tour Championship, it will be the last time fans get to watch Lexi Thompson swing her clubs on the course. Back in May, she announced her retirement, citing mental health struggles and the pressures of life in the public eye as the reasons behind her decision to hang up her clubs.

After a brief two-month hiatus, Thompson returned to action at the Annika driven by Gainbridge. Though she started strong with a 2-under par 72, she couldn’t maintain the pace, finishing with a 73 in the second round and missing the cut. Now, with one final event on the calendar, Thompson has one last shot to make an impression before stepping away from the greens.

But there’s a bit of history with the CME Group Tour Championship that makes this year’s participation even more crucial. While Thompson has qualified for the event in 2024, last year, she was notably absent. This indeed comes as a surprise considering she’s been a regular face at the event since it started back in 2011. So what kept her out in 2023?

Well, even though she ended the season strong with a T-8 finish and a few near-misses in other tournaments, Thompson’s shaky start to the year put her too far behind in points to qualify. And that’s what the real deal is, qualifying for the CME Group Tour Championship is all about accumulating points throughout the season.

You might think it’s simple—just play in tournaments and earn points, right? Well, not exactly. It’s not just about showing up in tournaments, rather players have to be consistent enough to earn the required points to be eligible for the season-ending event. And unfortunately, Thompson couldn’t quite manage to rack up enough points last year, hence her absence was understandable.
