‘Whole Room Just Went Faint’: Celebrating Tiger Woods’ 47th Birthday, Fred Couples Recalls a Hysterical Presidents Cup Incident

Having spent years being associated with the sport, Fred Couples knows a thing or two about golf. Although a serial winner himself, Couples finds delight in watching one of his juniors play, who is none other than the golf legend Tiger Woods. On the occasion of the latter’s 47th birthday, the senior golfer was asked to describe the best moments that he shared with Woods during his long career.

In a candid conversation, Couples revisited the prank on Woods during a Presidents Cup tournament, alongside describing his admiration for him.

With the sport’s most recognized face celebrating his 47th birthday, wishes poured in from fans and peers across the world. Among them was Couples, who shared a story that occurred during the Presidents Cup.

The 63-year-old has been a part of numerous Presidents Cup ventures, and so has Woods. The former spoke on one of his pranks on the 15-time major championship winner. “I did tell the story about the Presidents Cup where I put his name in the envelope, and it was not really his name, but we made it to look like his. And when we pulled it out at the end of the week, it’s for someone who, if they get ill or hurt themselves, they don’t play,” Couples began.

However, the mood changed when the tour officials found Woods’ name on it. “Well, the tour official came in and opened up the envelope and it said Tiger Woods and the whole room just went faint,” Couples said.

However, the miscommunication was soon resolved, but the veteran golfer revealed he got a lot of stick from Woods “but all in fun.”

Couples calls Woods “one of my all-time favorites”

The 1992 Masters winner also hailed Woods as one of the best players of all time, describing his experience of being paired up with him at the World Series. The 47-year-old scampered to victory in the duel, but not before leaving his competitor in awe of his performance.

“I got paired up with him one time on a Sunday when we were trying to win at the World Series and he won and I thought it was the hardest round,” Couples revealed, before adding, “he is one of my all-time favorites.”

Couples and Woods have both made their mark on the Presidents Cup, both as players and captains of Team USA. The former captained the side on three occasions, emerging with an unblemished success rate. Similarly, Woods grabbed his chance by captaining the side in the 2019 Presidents Cup, securing victory by a 16-14 margin.
