That’s not all. He played through to get into the Korn Ferry Tour and made his first cut on the circuit at the age of 16. The professional thus became the second-youngest player to ever pass the cut line on the circuit. Fast forward to his college life: the athlete finally received the break he needed after small runs at Wake Forest University, East Carolina University, and Arizona State University. He was specially invited into a KFT event in North Carolina, where Murray managed to finish T10. He was able to replicate the same in the following events following which he finished T2 on the circuit’s money list allowing him full PGA Tour status in the 2016-2017 season.
The American soon made his mark on the league with his first victory at the 2017 Barbasol Championship when he scored a 21-under 263 at 22 years of age. This helped him secure a two-year exemption through the 2019 season. However, the next few years were difficult for the professional who had been faced with various struggles including alcoholism as well as anxiety and depression.
Murray’s fight with addiction and depression
“I would drink during tournament weeks. It was my outlet,” admitted Grayson Murray during an interview following his Sony Open win, “I thought I was invincible coming out here as a 22-year-old, winning as a rookie, played three days hungover when I won.” Adding on, the golfer had also recounted how winning his rookie year as well as the feeling of invincibility he had as a result was both the best and worst thing that had happened to him.
The alcoholism, however, brought with it depression, anxiety, and self-esteem troubles. Murray even recounted how he thought of himself as a failure due to his professional career results. He once said, “There are days where I didn’t want to get out of bed… I always looked at myself as a failure. I thought I had a lot of talent that was just a waste of talent… I struggle with anxiety… depression. That stemmed a lot from the alcohol use. I struggle with comparing myself to others, and self-esteem. There’s a lot of issues that – I call them issues. I think they’re common issues that we all endure.” How did he get out of it? Well, he asked for help and his life changed.
The alcoholism stopped in 2022 when he met with a motorcycle crash in Bermuda during the PGA Tour’s Bermuda Championship. The golfer went ahead and hit the oncoming traffic due to which he required 50 stitches, 25 of which were on his face; “If I didn’t have my helmet on, I probably would have died. It should have been my rock bottom, but I had to keep going. I felt like I was still invincible.”

The recovery following the accident witnessed Grayson Murray put down his drink, attend rehab by choice, and turn religious once again. Recollecting the same, he said, “It took me a long time to get to this point. That was seven years ago, over seven years ago. I’m a different man now. I would not be in this position right now today if I didn’t put that drink down eight months ago.” But none of it would have been possible without his support system.
