Sergio Garcia is among the most known golfer of this generation. He has a total of 36 professional wins throughout his career on the PGA Tour and the DP World Tour. He has also been an important part of many Ryder Cup-winning teams. But his life has not always been this phenomenal. There was a time after 2012 when Garcia was not satisfied with his performances and scored only one win. It was at this time that he met his now-wife Angela Akins.

Akins had a positive impact on the Spanish golfer’s life and raised his spirits. In fact, her arrival was a positive omen that brought Sergio his first major. Garcia is a family man and has been married for half a decade now. The couple are parents to a daughter and a son. Let’s take a look at Garcia’s partner and wife who had been by his side through thick and thin.

Meet Angela Akins, spouse and support system of Sergio Garcia

Garcia is married to Angela Akins, the daughter of Marty Akins. Angela was born in 1986, in Texas where she grew up in as well. With her father being a quarterback for the Texas Longhorns she developed a passion for sports and golf from an early age and played for the college golf team. From 2004 – 2006 she took a course in journalism at Texas Christian University. Then she pursued her bachelor’s in broadcast journalism from the University of Texas at Austin where she also played for the women’s golf team.

According to her LinkedIn profile, she has much volunteer experience as well. She has worked as an Equestrian Assistant at Equest which is a Texas nonprofit co-operator, She has also been a volunteer at Dallas’ Children Advocacy Center, Ronald McDonald House of Dallas. She continues her efforts at the Junior League of Dallas where she is also a member. Before Garcia, Akins was earlier married to former golfer Ross Hamann from whom she divorced. 

Metting Garcia, marriage, and starting a family

Angela has worked as a golf reporter for Fox Sports Southwest and moved to Florida after landing a job on the Golf Channel. It was during this job at the Golf Channel that she met Garcia. The couple first met during the opening ceremony of the Rio Olympics. They got engaged in January 2017. Akins turned out to be a lucky charm for Garcia who after a few months won the Dubai Desert Classic. In July 2017 they got married in Texas and the reception was followed by a poolside after-party.

2017 was a great year for the Spanish golfer. In the month of April, he won his first major tournament, the Masters Championship in a playoff with Justin Rose. And three months later he tied the knot with Akins. The next year in 2018 Garcia and Akins increased the family count and welcomed their first child into the world. They were blessed with a baby girl whose name Azalea has a special meaning for the couple. Azalea was named after the iconic flower found on the 13th hole of Augusta National where Garcia made par and moved ahead to win his first major. In 2020 they welcomed a son whom they named Enzo.

Angela is very proud of her husband and his work. After the birth of their daughter when Sergio went to play at the 2018 Masters she tweeted in his support “Prouder than ever of you, @TheSergioGarcia! You bounced back with a birdie on 16! Then we came home to our beautiful baby girl & you totally forgot about the day’s events because you know what’s truly important.  That’s golf & you’re amazing!” In response, Garcia also tweeted “Thanks my love! Always proud of you babe!” When Garcia decided to move to LIV Golf, Angela supported his decision.

Speaking about Angela’s family Sergio once said “Marty is very, very positive, very, you know, outspoken and a very, very confident kind of guy, and it definitely helps when he’s encouraging you and things like that. Those things are nice to see.” The two support each other and are always there for their spouse.
