Is Sam Horsfield the next big star in LIV Golf? In his 3 years at the Saudi-based promotion, he has finished as a runner-up just once. That was his career-best performance in the league. Horsfield has won 3 events in his career apart from the amateur qualification event title to get his Tour card.
There is no doubt that a bright future lies ahead for Sam Horsfield. But we don’t know much about his past. So let’s take a look at the humble upbringing of the Englishman who is playing for the Majesticks GC in LIV Golf.

Sam Horsfield, the untold story
Sam Horsfield was born on October 28, 1996, to Sue and Tony Horsfield in Manchester, United Kingdom. Ever since a young age, the Englishman had shown a keen interest and love for golf. Horsfield was only 5 years old when his parents moved to Orlando, Florida and he played his first round of golf. He finished the round with 167. Fast forward 8 years and Horsfield had already broken 60 at the age of 13. His 59 shots at Highlands Reserve Golf Club in Orlando became the stepping stone to his dream of becoming a professional golfer.
Pretty soon, Sam Horsfield caught the attention of a lot of people from the golf community. But at the age of 13, he had left a lasting impression on Ian Poulter. According to his LIV Golf profile, Horsfield beat Poulter which led to the latter saying the former “was the best young player I’ve ever played with”. Pretty soon, the now 49-year-old took the Manchester native under his wing and molded him into a player capable of winning.
In 2014, Horsfield was only 17 when he won the Junior Players Championship and finished as a runner-up at the US Junior Amateur. This announced his arrival in the world of golf. The Manchester-born qualified for the U.S. Open in 2015 and 2016. On both occasions, he failed to make the cut. However, he did end up in 2nd place at the 2016 Western Amateur, a tournament that Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, and many other greats have won.
From 2015-17, Sam Horsfield studied for his degree at the University of Florida. After concluding his education, he soon turned back to his golf career, turning pro in 2017. The same year, he also won the European Tour Q-School to book his DP World Tour card for 2018. And so began the journey of many more victories. Horsfield won his first European Tour title, the Hero Open in 2020. That was followed by a Celtic Classic win in the same year. His last DP World Tour win was the 2022 Soudal Open. He jumped ship to LIV Golf in the same year.
Horsfield played as a substitute in the first year, but joined his mentor; Ian Poulter, Lee Westwood and Henrik Stenson at the Majesticks GC in 2023. However, the Englishman faced a stroke of bad luck after a few good finishes. After the first 3 matches, Horsfield had to get hip surgery. That put him out of commission for 5 months. He came back to LIV Golf Chicago to finish 15th on the leaderboard before dropping down to 44 in LIV Golf Jeddah. Horsfield also played the LIV Golf Miami Championship event at the Trump National Doral. Still, his efforts helped him rank 40th on the individual rankings, putting him in a safe spot for the 2024 season.
2024 was a much better season for Sam Horsfield where he played all the matches. He also got his best finish in a LIV Golf event after finishing as a runner-up at LIV Golf Nashville. Interestingly, this was also his only top-10 finish. Horsfield finished the season at 31st on the individual leaderboard. However, considering his performance throughout the season, it won’t come as a surprise if he wins his first event in 2025.
