Is Nicolas Colsaerts the unsung hero of the DP World Tour with his impressive career wins?

How did you view life when you were 18? While most of us were dealing with existential questions, Nicolas Colsaerts became a professional golf player. Today, the three-time DP Tour winner, Colsaerts, is a familiar name in the golf world. But what many don’t know is the story of how he became a part of this community.

With a dream of becoming the first great Belgian player, Colsaerts was first introduced to golf at the age of 6 by his father Patrick. Though he has appeared in several tournaments, he is prominently known for his performance in the 2012 Ryder Cup, where he, along with Lee Westwood, beat the legendary golf icon Tiger Woods and Steve Stricker in a fourball match. The match was indeed a memorable one, still reckoned as the best days of Colsaerts on the course.

At that time, The New York Times covered his Colsaerts’ victory, featuring an article that included insights from his sports psychologist Bob Rotella. Sharing about the golfer’s personality, Rotella said, “He’s got a personality made for being on a big stage. He’s a talkative, very easygoing kid with a lot of talent. I think he’s just kind of coming of age. He’s at the point in life where he’s willing to admit that he has some talent, and he’s ready to make a commitment to see how great he can be. He knows he’s got a chance to be the first great Belgian player, and he loves that idea.”

Besides being a player on the DP World Tour and serving as vice president of the Ryder Cup, Colsaerts boasts extensive on-course experience, having played in 472 tournaments to date. Some of his major wins include the Seve Trophy in 2011 and 2013, Royal Trophy in 2012 and 2013, World Cup in 2011, 2013, and 2016.

Today, as we reflect on his journey, the 41-year-old has undoubtedly come a long way, yet still has miles to go. Now a well-established player in the golf world, it’s hard to picture him in any other profession. But for Colsaerts, being a jack of all trades has been a common thing.

How did Nicolas Colsaerts develop an interest in sports?

Remember the times, when you wanted to be a teacher one day and an astronaut the next day? Colsaerts was also one such kid who had a bug inside him to try everything. From getting inspired by legendary NBA player Michael Jordan to admiring Tennis player Roger Federer, Colsaerts has spent his adolescent days exploring numerous sports. Well, why not? The Belgian Bomber comes from a family acquainted with sports, his great-grandfather represented Belgium at basketball and water polo at the 1920 Olympic Games.

With such an athletic lineage, developing an interest in sports came naturally to Colsaerts. Though many sports fascinated him, his inclination was always towards the games involving sticks, with hockey and golf being his favorite. Eventually, he chose golf over hockey and has since been making a name for himself in the sport.
