Golf is hailed as an individual sport but people often forget that player and caddy together make a team. Both must be in sync and have compatibility to get a good score on the course. Therefore, picking out a caddy is a very crucial decision that a golfer makes.

It goes without saying that people are ever-evolving and changing. Hence, it is normal to grow out of one person and move on to another who meets the needs of that time. Minjee Lee, who is an Australian LPGA golfer and in ranked 5th on the LPGA rankings, also did not hesitate before moving on from her caddie of five years. Let’s find out more about her new caddy and the dynamic Lee and he shares.

The 26-year-old LPGA golfer parted ways with her former caddy, Jason Gilroyed, who caddied her for five seasons. She won two majors, the 2021 Evian Championship in France as well as last year’s U.S. Women’s Open held at the Pine Needles before splitting paths with Gilroyed.

Lee now has Rance De Grussa in her bag. Being a fellow Australian, he is no newcomer to the sport of golf he has worked on men’s tours alongside Australian golfer Jason Scrivener. Therefore, he does have significant experience in bringing out his unique perspectives and could be valuable in Minjee Lee’s future events.

His Australian roots give him the added advantage of possessing knowledge about Australian courses and the unpredictable weather. He began his golfing journey at an early age like Lee, at the place where he grew up, called Perth in Australia.

The Player-Caddy Dynamic Chemistry on the Golf Course

Lee’s changes seem to have bored fruit, as she held off English golfer Charley Hull for a win at the season-ending Kroger Queen City Championship. In an interview with the New York Times a while back, she was asked how changing caddies has affected her on course. Lee claimed when she was younger she relied a lot on her caddie and did not know what she wanted but now she knows herself better and has matured more as a person.

She interestingly also said, “It just feels like I know what I want in a caddy and all that I need for my caddy. I don’t need the reassurance [that] I know what I’m doing.”

She went on to build upon her point by expressing that she needs somebody who she knows well and one who is going to be a good companion for her on the golf course. The LPGA pro thinks that caddies and players spend a lot of time together and if you don’t like the person, the companionship will not work and will end up giving bad results. She further emphasized having a personal liking for the player along with the technical expertise when needed on the course.

Minjee Lee’s decision to bring Rance De Grussa on board as her new caddy reflects her commitment to finding the perfect teammate for her journey lying ahead. Their share of Australian roots, De Grussa’s experience, and Lee’s evolving self-assuredness on the course signal an exciting new chapter in her already illustrious career. Do you think her change of course companion will lead to her performing better on the course? Let us know in the comments.
