At the DP World Tour Championship, Englishman Matt Wallace is sitting at the top of the leaderboard. With 16 under 200 and his last-round performance, Wallace has been the talk of the town. In the third round, Wallace shot consecutive birdies on back-9, a record made on the European Tour only twice before.
Now, as the fourth and final round waits on the lines to start, Wallace is preparing to win his third victory on the tour. As people gained interest in his golf, they also wondered about the caddie behind him. Let’s meet Matt Wallace’s French caddie, Samuel Bernard.

Samuel Bernard is the only French caddie on the PGA Tour. The 38-year-old French man has caddied for various golfers, however, his journey with golf started at the age of 15. Bernard started playing golf when he was 15 and turned professional at 18. He played in the French circuit and also on the Alps Tour.
After having no success at playing golf, Bernard decided to start teaching golf. He joined Terre Blanche Resort, where he used to do fitting for TaylorMade. While giving an interview to ffgolf, Samuel recalled practicing with Jean-Jacques Rivet (popular sports biomechanics) and Coach Alain Alberti.
Bernard made the move to full-time caddying after he met Romain Langasque and called him to be his caddie for the Challenge Tour. He professionally caddied in March of 2018 in Kenya on the bag of Langasque. With Romain Langasque, he went to play for the European Tour and achieved many things together.
Bernard’s time with Langasque ended in 2021 after they could not make the cut for the Spanish Open. The golfer and caddie parted ways on “excellent terms”. A year later, Bernard got a call from Maxime Demory, Benjamin Herbert’s agent. Bernard caddied for Hebert for the 2022 Ras Al Khaimah Championship.
He met Wallace there for a brief moment and exchanged a few words. As Herbert injured his wrist, Bernard moved to Robin Roussel’s bag. Soon after, a text message from Wallace’s side came in asking if he could caddy for him at the Valero Texas Open. The duo started their partnership after that.
Bernard and Wallace got their first PGA Tour victory at the 2023 Corales Puntacana Championship, where Bernard became the French caddie to win on the PGA Tour. Wallace praised his caddie for the win and said, “Couldn’t done it without him!” However, there was a little altercation between the two as they played at the Valspar Championship.
The heated altercation between Wallace and Bernard
In the third round at the Copperhead Course, Wallace took a shot for the 18th hole par 4 and hit it for the cart path. As he was walking down with his caddie, the two were seen in an altercation. Wallace’s lips read, “Shut the F**k up!” As the video made around on the internet people started criticizing Wallace.
Bernard himself came and justified and said. “It is part of everyday life,” and that American TV made a big deal out of it. Moreover, Bernard revealed that the altercation actually benefitted him, as Valspar gave him a caddie bonus.
The French caddie described his relationship with Wallace as purely professional, as he believes in painting a healthy distance and yet keeping the camaraderie. Additionally, an Instagram story of the Englishman revealed that he was on good terms with Bernard.

The role of caddie suits him perfectly and, in his own words, he cannot see himself doing anything else. The English and French men are now in contention at the DP World Tour Championship.
