Amidst the plenty of ongoing changes in the world, another one made its way! The R&A’s Martin Slumbers announced that he is stepping down from his CEO role, effective from 2024 end. The 63-year-old has been on the post since 2015, succeeding Peter Dawson. He brought a fresh perspective and a modern approach to the organization during his tenure.

Born in Brighton, England, he grew up playing golf and was an amateur player. Slumbers is a keen golfer and a member of Worplesdon Golf Club in Surrey, where he plays to a handicap of two. Slumbers is happily married and has two sons.

Martin Slumbers studied at Lancing College and has a BSc in Production Engineering and Economics from the University of Birmingham. The 63-year-old had a successful career in investment banking. He worked as a Chartered Accountant with Price Waterhouse in London. Afterward, he joined Saloman Brothers International and worked in London and Hong Kong.

In his tenure of 12 years with Saloman Brothers, he became the Chief Financial Officer and served in Europe and Asia.  In his role as CFO, he proved his skills and leadership abilities. Slumbers learned the ins and outs of the global finance markets. In 1998, he moved to another major investment bank, Deutsche Bank.

At Deutsche Bank, he served in many senior executive roles. He was then appointed as the Global Head of Deutsche Bank’s Investment Banking Operations in 2006, and in 2007, he worked as the Global Head of Global Business Services. His career took a dramatic turn in 2015, for the better!

He made a surprising career change. He left the world of investment and banking and joined the R&A, the governing body of golf clubs. He became the Chief Executive and Secretary of the R&A. However, his journey in his role has now come to an end.

The CEO released a statement and thanked his employees, saying, “It has been a privilege to serve golf at the highest level. It is a role that I have been proud to carry out on behalf of the R&A’s employees, the members of The Royal and Ancient Golf Club, and all our global partners.”

As the head of the R&A, Slumbers has had key successes, including the rapid growth of both the Open Championship and the Women’s British Open in commercial terms. Last year, he also led the plan to reduce the driving distance for professional players with the new regulation “rollback policy,” which garnered support from Rory McIlroy. Slumbers has been a respected figure, and his absence will be deep.

While talking about his legacy, Niall Farquharson, chairman of the R&A, said, “In Martin, we have been fortunate to have a CEO who has steered the organization through a period of growth and enhanced the profile and reputation of our sport to make it more accessible, appealing, and inclusive.”
