Lilia Vu is a rising name on the women’s golf circuit these days. This California-based athlete became professional in the year 2019 (in the month of January), and right after her professional status, she marked her presence by finishing T27 at the inaugural LPGA Q-Series. Going forward in 2021, she bagged three titles on the Symetra Tour and acquired a place in the top 250 WWGR rankings. Added to that, in 2021, she even collected the 2021 Potawatomi Cup.

Now, as far as her performance in 2023 is concerned, she has had four top-ten finishes, and the list includes two major wins at the Chevron Championship and the AIG Women’s Open. In her journey to glory, there was a vital member who assisted Vu through all the rough patches and hurdles. Who’s this trusted confidante? Let’s find out.

Having the right company on the course is indeed an important thing. No wonder Lilia Vu took her time to find a reliable caddie. After turning professional, she tried many caddies but none lived up to her expectations. All this happened before she brought Cole Pensanti on board.

Pensanti was on her bag when Lilia Vu won the Chevron Championship, which took place at Carlton Woods. After the completion of the four rounds, both Lilia Vu and Angel Yin were tied at 10-under par. But Vu finally had her breakaway win in the playoff round. She won the tournament by one stroke over Yin and bagged a hefty paycheck of $765,000.

This grand win wouldn’t have been possible without the magic words of her caddie, Cole Pensanti. In an interview, the two-time major winner disclosed, “I felt like it was a really hard day. The course was playing really difficult with the wind and the weather and it being colder. I just didn’t feel great on the course. I was getting kind of moody, and my caddie Cole was there to basically ground me and remind me like hey, we’re just going to try our best, and whatever happens happens. Just hit it on your line and then go from there and stop getting so upset over every little thing.”

Thus, Cole vitally executed his role as a caddie and helped Vu stay calm and composed, no matter what. His contributions don’t just end here. He even accompanied Lilia Vu at the Walton Health Golf Course, where Vu defeated Charley Hull by six shots and took the major crown home, along with a hefty seven-digit paycheck of $1,350,000. After the event ended, the modest golfer gave credit to her Los Angeles-based caddie for the shot on the 18th hole that sealed her victory.

Lilia Vu and her caddie continued the LPGA tradition after the Chevron Championship

Lilia Vu’s first major victory at the Chevron Championship, the first big event on the LPGA’s season schedule, definitely needed a celebration. Thus, in a happy mood, Vu took a jump into the lake, following the tournament’s time-honored tradition, where winners are supposed to jump into the lake by the 18th hole.

Vu and Pensanti both dived in and made merry. There is more; Pensanti also performed a signature caddie bellyflop.

Cole Pensanti dives into nostalgia and narrates his career as a caddie. He mentioned Alex and Danielle Kang and added how he caddied for both of them in amateur as well as professional events. Pensanti was on the bag of Kang when she had her first major victory at the 2017 Women’s PGA Championship. The six-time LPGA Tour winner defeated Brooke Henderson by one shot and secured the trophy.

Pensanti also revealed the reason why he enjoys caddying. He said, “Caddying is like a traveling golf/ geography/weather puzzle to help very talented athletes do the best they can. All things I like.” In addition to this, he also mentioned with a lot of pride, “I’ve never had a hole in one myself but caddied 9.”
