Leona Maguire is one of the top female golfers. When she triumphed by three strokes in the LPGA Drive-On Championship, she became the first Irish woman to win an event on the LPGA Tour. Maguire, who is currently ranked 21st on the LPGA, has already demonstrated her exceptional talent as an amateur. On the women’s World Amateur Golf Ranking, she held the top spot. With a total of 4.5 points, she surpassed the previous rookie point record in the Solheim Cup. Maguire is currently taking part in the Meijer LPGA Classic. She shot a second-round 65 to be within one stroke of the lead at the Michigan Meijer LPGA Classic.

Not only is Maguire showcasing her talents on the field, but her caddie, Dermot Byrne, is also one of the professionals out there. Over the past 25 years, Dermot Byrne has worked as a caddy. Midway through 2021, Byrne began caddying for Maguire. During the Bank of Hope LPGA Match Play in Las Vegas, he joined Maguire. He provided several helpful tips to Maguire throughout the games thanks to his knowledge and demeanor.

Before caddying for Maguire, Byrne was the looper for Shane Lowry for nine years. He joined Irish professional golf during the 2009 Irish Open as an amateur. During their time together, Lowry won the 2012 Portugal Masters and the 2015 WGC Bridgestone Invitational. But because of Lowry’s declining play, they both decided to part ways in June 2018. After that, Byrne caddied for Peter Lawrie, Stephen Gallacher, Sven Struver, and Julian Suri. Midway through 2021, he finally joined Maguire on the LPGA Tour.

Leona Maguire acknowledges that taking on Dermot Byrne as her caddy last June, changed the course of her career. She credited her caddie for helping her win the LPGA Drive-On Championship in Fort Myers, Florida.

Maguire talks about her caddie, Byrne

Maguire was coached by Shane Lowry. She learned about Byrne from there. She claimed that she called Byrne and asked him if he could attend the LPGA because he had never previously caddied for female players. Byrne accepted her offer right away since he was ready for a change and was willing to take a chance. She even claimed that the day Byrne joined her as a caddie in Vegas was a turning point in her career.

She claimed that Byrne had never played in the LPGA and that she was certain he had noticed anything remarkable about her. “He has had a lot of experience and has been in a lot of big situations in a lot of big events. I think we see shots very similar and he very quickly got to know my clubs and how I like to play, so that definitely helps. It’s also nice to have an Irish caddie on the bag as well,” she said.

Not only does Maguire give Byrne lot of credit for her success, but her father also makes sure to mention him. He observed Byrne’s influence on his daughter’s game. “We made a couple of changes earlier in the year; Leona took on Dermot Byrne as her caddy, who has been absolutely tremendous with her,” he said.

Well, it is true that every golfer needs a promising caddie to enhance their careers. Maguire has been fortunate to have Byrne’s unwavering support throughout her career. The magic this duo will bring to the course in the future is something we can’t wait to witness.
