Is Joe Highsmith the next big thing in golf, or just a flash in the pan?

Years after years, the PGA Tour welcomes a wave of new players. Yet, as the seasons unfold, only a few rise above the rest, leaving an impact. One such name that has shown tremendous growth so far is 2024 PGA Tour rookie Joe Highsmith. The young athlete is yet to win a tournament but he has already carved out a name for himself in the golf world.

Though he started his professional journey in 2022, with perpetual setbacks, he struggled to mark his entry to the esteemed PGA Tour. However, with a leap in 2023, Highsmith managed to get his PGA Tour card by finishing in the top 30 in the KFT point list. With a slow start in 2024, he missed the cut at the Sony Open in Hawaii. After that, he finished decently in the next two events at T34 and T33, but the streaks of missed cuts followed at Valspar and Cognizant Classic.

After delivering his first standout performance with a remarkable T6 at the Puerto Rico Open in March 2024, Highsmith finally breathed a sigh of relief, admitting, “I think today was a lot of progress on the mental side.” Little did he know, this was only the beginning, with many such performances awaiting him.

As the season unfolded, he performed in various championships but it was the Wyndham Championship in August that truly put him in the spotlight, making him the talk of the town. How? Well, Aces! He made history as the first player since 1983 to record three aces in a single PGA Tour season. At Rocket Mortgage Classic and American Express, he carded aces at the fifth and 13th hole respectively during the second rounds. His third hole-in-one came at the par-3 12th hole at Sedgefield Country Club. Oh, and this was also in the second round! It seems Friday is a lucky day for this 24-year-old.

After making history at Wyndham, he followed up with strong showings at the Procore Championship securing a T13 finish. Despite being a rookie, Highsmith’s golfing journey has been nothing short of remarkable. So, it’s obvious to assume that he may have made good money until now. Not exactly!

Have an interesting take?

How much has Joe Highsmith earned so far in 2024?

With the current Black Desert Championship, Highsmith has now competed in 24 PGA tour events. And as aforementioned, his performance is certainly enough to label him as a skilled golfer.  While Highsmith earned prize money from 9 tournaments this season, not all of his efforts were converted into monetary gains as he missed the cut in 15 events. For instance, he made $86,515 and $17,480 from his latest championships, the Procore Championship and the Sanderson Farms Championship.

However, for the Wyndham Championship, for which he was hailed, he earned nothing as he failed to make it to the weekend. The highest amount the golfer has drawn to date is $135,000 from the Puerto Rico Open. In total, he has amassed $494,768 from the PGA Tour so far.

While we know Highsmith’s on-course glory, there is little that we know about the golfer’s life off the course.

What is Joe Highsmith like beyond golf?

Highsmith was born in Lakewood, Washington, and still resides there. He completed his graduation from Pepperdine University. While golf has his heart, he is even very close to his grandfather, who often comes to cheer him up during his matches. When he was still figuring out his interest, Highsmith even tried his hands on the piano.

Having played the instrument for 12 years, if he hadn’t found his way to the greens, you probably would have known him as a pianist. His other option was pickleball, as he once claimed that he was better at it than golf. His favorite athletes include professional tennis players Gael Monfils, Nick Kyrgios, and Dustin Brown.

Considering all his talents, Highsmith could have been anywhere he wanted, yet as destiny planned, he is an uprising golfer today, making his friends and family proud.
