Jiyai Shin has established herself as a notable figure in professional golf. With an impressive history of achievements, Shin stands out as an unstoppable force in the sport. Shin had a lot of inspiration throughout her life, with Seri Pak being a particularly significant influence on her career. Shin considers Pak an “idol” and likes to follow her path to date. Even at the 2024 FIR HILLS SERI PAK Championship, the inclusion of Seri Pak as a host provided a morale boost for the South Korean pro.

Shin expressed her happiness to be participating at Palos Verdes Golf Club, stating that she feels “glad to be playing.” However, besides Pak, the 36-year-old has experienced numerous moments and incidents that have served as sources of inspiration for the Korean prodigy, shaping her life up to this point. What tragedy befell on Jiyai Shin?

Even though Shin has a public Instagram account with 38k+ followers, there isn’t much information about her. Nevertheless, Shin’s accomplishments throughout her career provide a glimpse into her life. Shin is 36 years old and was born on April 28, 1988, in Yeonggwang County, South Korea. There is a little speculation that she completed her graduation from Yonsei University, South Korea.

 

Shin’s mother died in 2005 during a car accident, and his siblings were also seriously injured, and they were hospitalized for nearly a year. The details concerning her father remain undisclosed to this day. She started her professional career at the age of 16, after her mother’s death. Shin has been unstoppable following that tragedy and also dedicates all her achievements to her mother’s memories.

Career highlights of the South Korean pro

She has been playing on Korean and Japanese LPGA Tours only and has made for herself throughout the years. At the end of 2005, Shin won the Hong Kong Open and returned to the KLPGA in 2006 as a rookie. Following that, she won the Korean Women’s Open, where she defeated American LPGA star Cristie Kerr. 2007 was Shin’s year, where he started the year with Young Kim to represent Korea at the World Cup before the KLPGA season started.

Later, she dominated the 2007 season with 10 wins in just 19 starts and shattered the Tour records. Shin finished 6th in the U.S. Women’s Open and 3rd in the Evian Masters, which were her first two major tournaments. At the end of 2007, she played in the Kyoraku Cup and the Lexus Cup, both of which were team events. The Kyoraku Cup didn’t go well for the South Korean pro; however, she made a comeback with 2.5 points for the Asian team in the Lexus Cup.

In 2008, Shin teamed up with Eun Hee Ji to represent Korea at the Women’s World Cup, ultimately securing second place for the Philippines. Following that, she became the first non-LPGA member to win the 2008 Women’s Open Championship, which was her first major of the season.

She also emerged victorious at the Mizuno Classic in Japan, a remarkable feat that was celebrated as the LPGA event of the year. Before even joining the tour, she became the first woman in the history of the LPGA to win three LPGA events. Shin was ranked number one for a few weeks from 2010 to 2011 in the Rolex  Women’s World Golf Rankings.

Apart from her exceptional performances on the golf course, Shin finds pleasure in traveling to different places. She also has a soft spot for animals, especially dogs, and delights in having pets.
