After struggling for five years on the PGA Tour, Grayson Murray is finally up for contention after his win in 2017. Playing at the Sony Open, the North Carolina native is leading the scoreboard with an eagle and 14 under after three rounds. This will be Murray’s second victory since his debut in 2017.

The unexpected leader of the Sony Open is making his way through the tough competition. But it could not have been done without the help of his caddie, Jay Green, who is currently holding his bag in Hawaii.

Jay was born in Georgia to the Green family on January 29th, 1996. He is the youngest child of the three. He has one brother, Brett, and a sister, whose name is Erinn McCallister. Green spent his childhood in Georgia. However, later, he moved to the midwestern United States.

In Michigan, he studied at Alma High School. Green used to play three different sports. In the fall, Green was the number one singles player for his tennis team. Moreover, during the same period, he went ahead to play against the state champion at the Tennis Regional Finals.

Other than tennis, he was an avid basketball player for his school. Getting inspiration from his elder brother, Brett Green, who also used to play golf and studied at Tiffin University, Jay also played for the Alma boys golf team during his high school years.

With Alma’s golf teams, he was tied for fifth, while his team was third as a team. Once in 2014, he asserted to become “Mr. Golf for the state of Michigan and the state champion,” but failed. As an 18-year-old, he declared that golf was his “passion.”

He continued to follow his passion. After graduating from high school, he joined the Michigan Players Junior Golf Tour. Later, he got himself inducted into Tiffin University, courtesy of his athletic scholarship.

At the university, he majored in Exercise Science and had a GPA of 3.91. In 2016, his team won the GLIAC championship. After two years, he was awarded the Elite 90 Award for the 2018 NCAA Division II Men’s Golf Championship.

Jay Green’s marriage and golfing career

Three years after his graduation, Jay Green got his first gig in professional golf. During that period, Green was caddying at an island resort in Georgia. After meeting Spencer Ralston in February, the two met again in June for Green’s first official run on the course. Green was acquired as Ralston’s caddie through a sports agency.

He flew down to San Diego for the 121st U.S. Open. However, Green caddied only for two rounds as Ralston missed the cut. Nevertheless, Green was ecstatic to play as a professional caddie. With his professional life moving forward, Green also took a massive leap into his personal life.

In September 2022, the 28-year-old caddie proposed to his long-time girlfriend, Sarah Herb. They got engaged on the Sea Island Resorts golf course. In the same year, he caddied for Will Gordon. Later that year, he started his third caddy gig. Green caddied for Kevin Roy for a certain amount of time.

Through making the jump from one golfer to another, he tied the knot with his fiance in September 2023. Around the same time, Grayson Murray had parted ways with his caddie, Kip Henley. Green was then hired as the new looper for Murray. The two have only a few games together, but it seems that they have formed quite a camaraderie.

In his post-match conference, Murray credited Green for making it easy for him inside the ropes. The 1x PGA Tour winner said, “My caddie, Jay, is one of my biggest cheerleaders.” The encouragement by Green has made it easy to go through hard days. Being relatively young as a looper, this will be Green’s first PGA Tour win.
